In a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec)

summit in Manila on Thursday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Aquino
agreed on the hiring of Filipino domestic workers in the special economic zones in Japans
Kanagawa and Osaka Prefectures.
Another issue which Japan and the Philippines agreed on today is Japans (welcoming)
household workers to Japanese economic zones, Yasuhisa Kawamura, Japans press secretary
and Abes spokesperson told reporters.
The agreement, however, was still vague on the number of workers from the Philippines Japan
would need.
It depends on how many people are wanted on the Japanese side. Based on the need, we
will have the appropriate number of workers, Kawamura said.
With Prime Minister Abes approval, the system to accept Filipino workers is almost [a done
deal], Kawamura said.
The spokesperson said Japan wanted to begin hiring by the end of the year at the earliest.
Abe requested from the side of the Philippines that the necessary preparations must be
made so the agreement could be smoothly implemented, Kawamura said.

KUALA LUMPURAttending his last Association of Southeast Asian Nations

(Asean) summit on Saturday, President Benigno Aquino III took every chance to
denounce Chinas artificial island building in the heavily disputed South China Sea.
Mr. Aquino, who steps down in June next year, called on the nine other leaders of
Asean not to allow China to use force or threat to assert its claim to nearly all of the
South China Sea in violation of international law.
In statements at all meetings during the Asean summit and in dialogues
between the bloc and its partners China, Japan, South Korea, the United States and
India, Mr. Aquino called attention to rising tensions in the region over Beijings
massive land reclamation in the Spratly archipelago to build artificial islands on reefs
from which it could project its growing military power.

WHEN BACHELOR PRESIDENT AQUINO

ENTERTAINS, WHO NEEDS A FIRST LADY?

Team Trudeau or Team Nieto? Time to move on, folks.

But before we do, something must be said about the style of the Aquino administration (the
pundits take care of the substance); to be specific, the hosting style of a bachelor President.
President Aquino has no first lady to do cohosting chores.
So how does the bachelor President manage? And how do we rate his entertaining style? In truth,
however, his four sisters have competently risen to the challenge. They take turns being by his
side in official or state functions. Or as was the case during the Asia-Pacific Economic
Cooperation (Apec) last week, they were all around to tour the spouses of the economic leaders
around historic Intramuros.
Even the most low-key of them, Viel Aquino-Dee, stepped up to the plate and helped Mr.
Aquino entertain Chile President Michelle Bachelet at a state luncheon on Monday. Celebrity
sister Kris Aquino lent her star presence at the state dinner in honor of the dashing Mexican
president, Enrique Pea Nieto.

Obama struggles to keep focus

on Asia
Philippine Daily Inquirer

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia US President Barack Obama voiced his determination to

put Asia front and center in his foreign policy on Saturday, even as a two-nation visit to the
region was eclipsed by jihadist attacks in France and Mali.
Americas self-styled Pacific President has been frustrated to see a trip to Malaysia and the
Philippines designed to highlight his stated refocus on Asia overshadowed once again.
After years of talking about the need to deepen trade, security and diplomatic ties with
the region, White House officials had hoped the trip would be a victory lap.
Twelve countries recently agreed to Obamas Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade pact, and the
US pledged to boost security assistance to its ally the Philippines, which is in a confrontation
with China over maritime territory.
During the weeklong Asia swing, Obama has touted his years growing up in Southeast
Asia, vowed to become the first president to visit Laos, and chatted with audience members in
Bahasa Indonesia.
But at a business forum on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean)
Summit in Malaysia yesterday, Obama had to begin by talking about events half a world away in
Mali, where 27 people died in an attack by gun-toting jihadists.
In a speech, Obama condemned the appalling attack, adding that this barbarity only stiffens
our resolve to meet this challenge of extremist violence.

On behalf of the American people, I want to extend our deepest condolences to the
people of Mali and the victims families, including at least one American, he said.
