Our God Shall Come

A Study in the Old Testament Scriptures Pertaining

To The Second Coming of Christ
(Below is a bible study by James H. Brookes. This was featured, over a span of three
months, in his magazine called "The Truth" back in 1897. Just two months after this
publication, James H. Brookes passed away and was promoted to glory. We pray that
this study would be a blessing to you! Please remember that these Scriptures are not
referring to the Rapture but rather the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ at the
battle of Armageddon, when we, His Saints, return with the Lord.)
The theme of the Old Testament is the Coming One. There are more than three
hundred promises concerning Him, and the biographies of individuals, the records of
families, the events of nations, the songs of poets, the predictions of prophets, circle
about Him as the central sun of the entire system of divine revelation. Sometimes we
find His first and Second Coming included within the scope of a single verse, like two
gigantic peaks of mountains, seen in perspective that appear to be one; but looked
upon more closely, great intervals and valleys are discovered that lie between.
1. At His first coming, the seed of the woman, not of the man, shall have His heel
bruised by Satan; at His second coming, Christ shall bruise Satan's head. (Genesis
3:15)
2. Enoch walked with God; and his preaching is given in one of the last books of the
Bible: "Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the
Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment upon all," (Jude
14,15).
3. "The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet,
until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be." (Genesis
49:10)
4. He preserves Israel during the time of their exile in the land of their enemies, and
will bring them forth, as when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. (Lev.
26:44,45 )
5. Balaam was forced to pronounce his own doom: "I shall see him, but not now: I
shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre
shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the
children of Sheth...Alas, who shall live when God doeth this!" (Numbers 24:17)
6 If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the
LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee: And the LORD thy God
will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it;
and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers. And the LORD thy God
will circumcise thine heart... (Deut 30:4-6a )
7. He will advance Israel to the high places of the earth, making them the head, and
not the tail, of the nations as it is this day. (Deut. 28:13; 33:26-29)
8. He will judge the earth. " The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces;
out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the
earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.
(1Sam 2:10)

9. He establishes the house of David. "And thine house and thy kingdom shall be
established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever." (2Samuel
7:16)
10. He will be head of the heathen. "thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a
people which I knew not shall serve me." (2 Sam. 22:44)
11. He will establish the throne of David forever, but only at His Second Coming.
"The throne of David shall be established before the Lord forever." (1 Kings 2:45)
12. He is to be the chief Prince. "Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came
the chief Prince," (1 Chron. 5:2)
13. "Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall
dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of
wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning, And yet this was a small
thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant's house for a
great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high
degree, O LORD God." (1Chron 17:9, 17)
14. "Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the
nations, the Lord reigneth...Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence
of the Lord, because He cometh to judge the earth." (1 Chron. 16:31,33)
15. He shall stand on the earth in the last day. "I know that my Redeemer liveth, and
that He shall stand at the last day upon the earth; and after I shall awake, though this
body be destroyed, yet out of my body, shall I see God." (Job 19:25)
16. As crowned King He receives His inheritance. "Ask of me, and I shall give thee the
heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
Thous shalt break them with a rod of iron, thou shalt dash them in pieces like a
potter's verssel." (Psalm 2:8-9)
17. So universal is His sovereinty that people feign obedience. "As soon as they hear
of me, they shall obey me; and the strangers shall yield feigned obedience unto me."
(Psalm 18:43,44.)
18. He will be supreme Governor. "All the ends of the world shall remember and turn
unto the Lord; and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. For the
kingdom is the Lord's, and He is the Governor among the nations." (Psalm 22:27,28)
19. He will break the long silence which Heaven has observed. "Our God shall come,
and shall not keep silence...He shall call to the heavens above, and to the earth, that
He may judge His people. Gather my saints together unto me; those that have a
covenant with me by sacrifice." (Psalm 50:3-5)
20. His reign is unlimited. "All kings shall fall down before Him; all nations shall serve
Him." (Psalm 72:11, 17)
21. He is worshipped and glorified everywhere. "All nations whom thou hast made
shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name." (Psalm 86:9)
22. He shall have the homage of inanimate creation. "Then shall all the trees of the

wood rejoice before the Lord: for He cometh, for He cometh to judge the earth: He
shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with His truth," (Psalm
96:12-13)
23. He shall appear in glory to build up Zion, and then to gather the people at large,
and the kingdoms to serve Him. "When the Lord shall build up Zion, He shall appear
in glory...When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms to serve the
Lord." (Psalm 102:16, 22)
24. "The Lord shall reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations." (Psalm
146:10)
25. Under His reign, wars shall cease. And he shall judge among the nations, and
shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their
spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall
they learn war any more. (Isaiah 2:4)
26. At His coming government shall be established. For unto us a child is born, unto
us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall
be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince
of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon
the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with
judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of
hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6,7 )
27. He comes to slay the lawless one, or the antichrist, with the breath of His lips, and
the blessings of His reign shall extend to the poor and even the creatures of the earth
shall live in peace. But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with
equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his
mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And righteousness
shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. The wolf also
shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and
the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow
and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall
eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the
weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den. They shall not hurt nor
destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the
LORD as the waters cover the sea. (Isaiah 11:4-9 )
28. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the
second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria,
and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar,
and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. And he shall set up an ensign for
the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the
dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. (Isaiah 11:11,12)
29. Poor, degraded, oppressed Egypt shall then be exalted. In that day shall there be
an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof

Lord in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation. (Isaiah 19:19,21)
30. In a time of universal distress and desolation, when the earth shall reel to and for
like a drunkard, then the morn shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the
Lord of hosts shall reign in Mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before His ancients,
gloriously. (Isaiah 24:23)

31. He will come to deliver His people. He will swallow up death in victory; and the
Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of His people shall he
take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it. And it shall be said in
that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us: this is the
Lord, we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation. (Isaiah
25:8,9)
32. At His coming He will raise His dead. Thy dead shall live, my dead body shall
arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and
the earth shall cast out the dead, (Isaiah 26:19)
33. At the time of the second advent, He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take
root; Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit And it
shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall beat off from the channel of the
river unto the stream of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O children of
Israel, (Isaiah 27:6,12)
34. In that day shall the Lord of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of
beauty, unto the residue of His people, (Isaiah 28:5)
35. Moreover, the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of
the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth
up the breach of His people, and healeth the stroke of their wound And the Lord
shall cause His glorious voice to be heard, and shall show the lighting down of His
arm, with the indignation of His anger, and with the flame of His devouring fire, with
scattering, and tempest, and hailstones, (Isaiah 30:26, 30)
36. Thine eyes shall see the King in His beauty: they shall behold thy land far
extendedAnd the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick; the people that dwell therein
shall be forgiven their iniquity, (Isaiah 33:17,24)
37. He will come and save youAnd an highway shall be there, and a way, and it
shall be called, the way of holiness;the unclean shall not pass over it; for He Himself
shall be with them, the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. And the
ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs, and everlasting joy
upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall
flee away. (Isaiah 35:4-10)
38. Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him:
behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He shall feed his flock like a
shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and
shall gently lead those that are with young. (Isaiah 40:10,11)
39. Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day
that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I. How beautiful upon the mountains are
the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good
tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! Thy
watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall
see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion. (Isaiah 52:6-8)

flock, Jeremiah 31:10, the entire chapter, shows that it is a personal gathering at the
time of our Lords return, when Israel shall be enlarged and established forever.
48. Thus saith the Lord GOD; Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: this shall
not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high. I will overturn,
overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I
will give it him. (Ezek 21:26,27 )

the name of the city from that day shall be Jehovah-shamanah the LORD is there.

dominion, and brake to pieces the kingdoms that exist in the End Times, and this
Stone is Christ. (See Daniel 2: 34-45)
52. I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the
clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before
him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people,
nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. (Dan
7:13,14)
53. "And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and
with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break
the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie
down safely. And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me

in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. I will even

betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the LORD. And it shall
come to pass in that day, I will hear, saith the LORD, I will hear the heavens, and they
shall hear the earth; And the earth shall hear the corn, and the wine, and the oil; and
they shall hear Jezreel. And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy
upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my
people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God." (Hos 2:18-23)

the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at
hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as
the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and
a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to
the years of many generations." (Joel 2:1-2)
56. "The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the
heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and
the strength of the children of Israel. So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God
dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no
strangers pass through her any more. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the
mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the
rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of
the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim. Egypt shall be a desolation, and
Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah,
because they have shed innocent blood in their land. But Judah shall dwell for ever,
and Jerusalem from generation to generation. For I will cleanse their blood that I have
not cleansed: for the LORD dwelleth in Zion." (Joel 3:16-21)
57. "For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like
as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth. All the
sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor
prevent us. In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close
up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days
of old: That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are
called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this. Behold, the days come, saith the
LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that
soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.
And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the
waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine
thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them. And I will plant them
upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have
given them, saith the LORD thy God. (Amo 9:9-15)
58. In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine
hands be slack. The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will
rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing
At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make
you a name and a praise among all people of the earth(Zep 3:16-20)

glory in the midst of herFor thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he
sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the
apple of his eyeSing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell
in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in
that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt
know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee. And the LORD shall inherit
Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again. Be silent, O all
flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation. (Zech 2:5-13)

Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the
LORD of hosts the holy mountain. (Zec 8:3)

heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to
the ends of the earth. (Zech 9:10)

against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand
in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the
mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst
thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley;
and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the
south and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee. And it shall
come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one
day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass,
that at evening time it shall be light. And it shall be in that day, that living waters
shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them
toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. And the LORD shall be
king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one. (Zec
14:1-9)
64. For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name
shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto
my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith
the LORD of hosts. (Mal 1:11)
65. and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the
messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the
LORD of hosts. (Mal 3:1)
This is only a sample of the way in which the Second Coming of the Lord is set forth in
the Old Testament. It will be observed that the purposes and results of His coming are
manifold; and it should not be forgotten that a large part of His design relates directly
to Israel, as His ancient, present and future earthly people. All of the men employed
to reveal Gods will were prophets in the common acceptations of the word, sent not
only to forth tell, but foretell. They foretold events that occurred in their days, and
this should be sufficient to convince any reasonable man, that their predictions of
events at a future time will surely be fulfilled. If they foresaw and foretold what has
passed into history, they did also of things which are to come. ~ J.H. Brookes
