A REPORT ON PAVEMENT DESIGN FOR THE SECTION OF ROAD


FROM THE ADMINSTRATIVE
BLDG.(VNIT) TO SBI(VNIT) INSIDE THE CAMPUS
1) INTRODUCTION:The section of the road from Administrative building to SBI is a single lane road
carrying low passenger traffic. It is proposed to overlaying of the entire road. The
pavement design for the portion is proposed based on the existing carriageway.
Based on the soil investigation performed by VNIT students, the de- sign is
proposed. The existing road structure is evaluated through Benkelman Beam
Deflection techniq- ue and the overlay for the existing road is proposed using BBD
test as per IRC 81 : 1997 Guidelines for Strengthening of flexible road pavements
using Benkelman Beam Deflection technique. The proposed overlay portion is
designed as per IRC 37 : 2001 Guidelines for the design of flexible pavements.
The section of the road is divided into 2 portions and the BBD survey is conducted
for each section. The design for overlaying portion is proposed individually for the two section.
2) SOIL CONDITION:Soil is having a higher moisture content because BBD test is performed next day of
the rain. The area is comes within the Nagpur, having major part of black cotton
soil and dark black soil. So the plastic index will be high for this region. Nagpur
comes under the low rainfall area having rainfall less than 1300 mm
3) PAVEMENT AND SOIL DATA:MOISTURE CONTENT OF SOIL:- 18%

By applying seasonal correction:Finally corrected Dc = 1.05*5.09=5.34mm (for section 2)


But for road section 2 sub section ABC is more damaged compare to CDEF so
for ABC part Xm = (6.98+3.94+1.44)/3 =4.12mm
St Dev. = 2.26mm
so Dc = 6.4 mm,
After applying seasonal correction Dc = 6.72 mm
for CDEF part Xm = 1.94mm
St Dev. = .75mm
so Dc =2.7mm
after apply seasonal correction= 2.83 take 3 mm

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:


FOR SECTION 1:NO OVERLAY OF PAVEMENT IS REQUIRED , ROAD IS IN QUITE GOOD CONDITION.
FOR SECTION 2:(a) SUB PART ABC SHOULD BE PROVIDED WITH OVERLAY OF 160mm BM LAYER
IMMEDIATELY .
(b) ALTERNATIVE WE CAN PROVIDE ALSO .7*160= 112mm BDM/AC LAYERS.
(45mmAC+70mmBDM) LAYERS.
(c)SUB PART CDEF IS IN ITS FINAL CONDITION. IT SHOULD BE PROVIDED OVERLAY
OF 25mm BITUMAN LAYER FOR INCREASING ITS DURABILITY AND WORKABILTY.
