Statement of purpose
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am currently a student at the Ecole des Mines de Nancy, ranked as one of the top
engineering school in France. After having passed the Baccalaureat S (majors in Maths and
Physics) with distinction (I obtained the best possible grade : very good, see copy inclosed),
I spent my first three years as an undergraduate in a classe prparatoire at Sainte Genevieve,
an establishment of high renown in France. During these three very demanding years, I
acquired a precise and advanced knowledge in Mathematics (especially in Linear Algebra)
and Physics, which enabled me to succeed in the nation wide competitive exams and thus to
enter the Ecoles des Mines. I am now ranked among the top 15% of my year group.
As you will see from my resume or in my transcripts, I have always been an active
student and this does not only apply to academic subjects. During each of the past five years, I
have been in charge of organizing a project with other students. For instance, I have been part
of the Forum Est-Horizon, a career fair that took place in November 1999 and that gathered
more than five thousand students and a hundred companies. This was a long and exacting job
involving 24 students from different schools of Nancy. We received the congratulations of the
French Minister of Industry for our initiative.
These organizing skills and my interest in management explain why I am naturally
interested in Industrial Engineering, which is already the major I have chosen for my second
year at the Ecole des Mines. I had then confirmation that this field of study will give me the
abilities to deal with rapidly changing technologies and world market conditions. I was taught
how to approach integrated systems for greater overall effectiveness. That was also when I
was first told of the Industrial Engineering Department of Purdue University. Miss Portmann,
Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering of the Ecole des Mines, explained to me
that the Faculty at Purdue were internationally recognized as experts in many aspects of
Industrial Engineering. As a result, I am convinced that being accepted next year in your
department would be for me a great opportunity since it would enable me to acquire the best
knowledge I could hope to get in Industrial Engineering as well as it would widen my vision
of the world.
Concerning my professional plans, I would like to work in management and
consulting as a member of teams leading industrial projects. That is why the specialization
you propose on Production and Management Systems of Engineering held my attention. I still
do not know whether I will settle in the United States but the years I hope I will be spending
in your University will help me to make up my mind and will undoubtedly be useful for the
international career I am planning.
