The mobile phone arrived in Ireland in 1985. This

lecture explores how the mobile phone has evolved
from very basic beginnings to today's 4G smart
phone device that acts as our gateway to the web,
ensures that we have a camera with us at all times,
can pinpoint our physical location and has
revolutionised our lives and the very language we
use to communicate. The lecture also identifies
key technical advances that contributed to the
mobile phone network transforming from a voice
telephony network to primarily a data network.
