MARPOL 1 Prevention of Pollution by [OIL] from Ships

Definitions:
Oil any form of petroleum subject to annex 2 of the convention
Crude Oil Liquid hydrocarbons occurring naturally in the earth
Oil Tanker any ship constructed or adapted to carry oil in bulk in its cargo
spaces
Crude Oil tanker - any tanker that engaged in the trade of carrying crude oil
Product Tanker - any tanker engaged in the trade of carrying oils except
crude oil
Combination Carrier a ship designed to carry either oil or solid cargoes in
bulk
Nearest Land the baseline from which territorial waters are establish
Special area an area recognized for technical reasons in relation to:

Ecological
Oceanographical
Particular nature of traffic

Requires special mandatory measures to prevent the sea pollution by OIL is

required

Mediterranean Sea
Baltic Sea

Black Sea
Red Sea

The Gulf of Aden

The Oman Area of the Arabian Sea

The Gulfs Area

Antarctic Area
North West European Waters
Southern South African Waters

Oil Residue - waste oil products generated during the normal operation of the
ship
Oil Residue (sludge) tank tank for holding oil residue (sludge)
Oily Bilge water bilge water contaminated by oil
Oily Bilge water holding tank - tank collecting oily bilge water (prior to transfer
or disposal)
Instantaneous Rate of Discharge of Oil content Rate of discharge of oil in
litres per knot (nautical mile)
Clean Ballast Ballast water that :

contains < 15ppm

has no visible traces of oil
has no sludge that can be deposited under the water surface
has been in a ballast tanks that once carried oil and has
been cleaned

Segregated Ballast Ballast from dedicated ballast tanks (separated from cargo
oil spaces and oil fuel system)
Standard Discharge Connection enables reception facilities pipes to be
connected to the ships discharge pipelines for sludge tank & machinery
bilges residues
