Dr.Krastman,howdidyoubecomeinvolvedinyourresearch,particularlyinyourstudyoftheHopiIndiansandtheInnerEarth?
PleasecallmeHank.In1961,whileattendingclassesattheUniversityofNorthernArizonaImetayoung,blueeyes,blondheaded
fellowstudentnamedKarlKopaviWaltz[oftheWaltzclanoftheHopination].ThroughconversationIlearnedthathewasaHopi
IndianwithaDutchancestorandwasplanningonbecomingateacher.
Thename"KarlWaltz"camefromhisGreatGreatGrandfather"JacobWaltz"who,wasfromHolland.AsIwasalsofromHolland
thisbecameoutbond.IlearnedthatJacobWaltzwaswellknowntowesternhistorybuffsasthe"lostDutchman",holderofthe
secretofTheLostDutchmanMineinArizona'sSuperstitionMountains.Iwillgointothisindetailinmyupcomingbook"Kopavi",
butin1875attheageof65,Jacobmarrieda16yearoldHopigirlwhowasnamedbecauseofherlightcomplexionandblueeyes
MUHA,the"FireOne".
KopaviandIbecameclosefriendsandastimewentonhetoldmemanythingsthatmadesuchgoodsensethatIwantedtoknow
more.Oneoftthemostfascinatingthingshetoldmewastherealsecretof"TheLostDutchmanMine".
KopavitoldmethathisgrandmotherhadtoldhimthathisGreatGreatGrandfather,JacobWaltzhadlivedwiththePimaIndians
attheSuperstitionMountains.TheIndiansgrewtotrustthe64yearoldDutchmanandsincethePima'swerenotallowedtoenter
thesacredentrancestotheunderground,theyaskedhimtotakesacksofsalttotheundergroundpeople.Saltisscarceintheinner
worldandgoldisnot.Jacobinturnwouldrecievesacksofgoldashisreward.
Sothe"LostDutchmanMine"neverexisted?
That'sright.it'sactuallyanentrancetotheinnerlandsand,asIlearnedlater,justoneofmanyentrancesfoundaroundtheworld.I
alsowasamazedtolearnthatKopaviwasactuallyfromtheundergroundcityofPALATKWAPI.
OnedayKopaviaskedifI'dliketoactuallyseeanentrancetotheunderground...Iwasthrilled.
[Note:theHopisbelievethatthePuebloIndianshadinthemostancienttimestakenupresidencewithinanunderground'cavern'
worldandafteralongperiodoftimeemergedonceagainontothesurface.Somesaythatreptilianhumanoidsdrovethemtothe
surface,otherversionsstatethatsomeoftheundergroundHopiturnedtopracticingsorceryandmadethingsbadfortherest,while
otherversionsstatethatanunderground'flood'forcedthemtoseekrefugetopside.Someversionssaythattheyemergedthrougha
cavern,otherthroughamound,andstillotherversionsstatethattheportalofemergence,thesipapuorsipapuni,lieshiddenunder
apoolofyellowishwater.MostoftheHopiversionshoweveragreewiththeLOCATIONofthesipapu...somewherealongtheLittle
ColoradoRiver,a'short'waysupstreamfromitsconfluencewiththeColoradoRiver.Thesipapuisconsideredoneofthemost
sacredsitesoftheHopipeople.Branton]
FirstwewenttotheGrandCanyonwherewehiredtwodonkeys.Karlassuredme[that]thedonkeysweresurefooted,butIwasn't
sosureoncewestartedtoclimb,thetrailbecamesmallandfullofrocksandfromtimetotimeIcouldfeelthedonkeyshindlegsslip
onthesmooth,looseslate.AllIcoulddowasholdonandtrytoshutoutthesoundofloosenedrockasitclattereddownthecliffside
tothegroundbelow.FinallywecametoawidespotonthetrailandIwasabletobreathagain.Wetookourbreatheronasmall
plateaufromwhichthepanoramicviewoftheGrandCanyonspreadoutbelowdisplayingtherichearthcolorsfoundonlyinthe
Americansouthwest.Karlbroughtoutablindfoldandexplainedthat,whilehehadsecuredpermissionfromtheCouncilofNinefor
metoenterthesesacredgrounds,hehadbeenrequestedtocovermyeyesfromhereonout.TherestoftherideintotheCanyonwas
terrifyingtosaytheleast.HowmuchtimehadpassedIdidnotknow,Iwastoobusyhangingontothesaddleofthesmallbrave
beast.
Afterwhatseemedtobeaneternity,wcametoastopandKarlremovedmyblindfold.Asmyeyesadjustedtothebrightsunlight
again,Ilookedaroundme.Wewereinalargeclearingflushagainstthecanyonwall.Karlmotionedformetoclimbdownfrommy
now,uncomfortableperch,ashedidthesame.AfterstretchingmytensedupbodyIturnedtoKarlwhowasstandingnexttothe
sheercliffwall.
"Putyourhandagainstthewallrighthere,"hesaidpointingtothesolidrockface.Ididasheasked,andmyhanddidn'tstop.It
continuedrightthroughthewall.Itseemedthatthecliffwallwasonlyacreatedillusiontokeepunwantedpeopleaway.Actuallyit
wastheentrancetoalargesecretcavecalled"PUPOVI".AswewalkedinsideIwasamazedtofindthecavewasbrightlylit.Before
uswasasortofescalatortypedevicewhichyoulaydownon.Therewassomesortoftransparentbubblewhichcoveredyoucalleda
HAWIOVI.Myheartwasbeatingfast,soIstoodlookingatthisstrangesightasIcaughtmybreath.
NowIhaveaconfessiontomake.ForyearsIhavebeentellingpeoplethatthisisasfarasIwent.Ilied.Iwastoldnottoreveal
anymorethanthis.However,Ihavenowbeengivenpermissiontotelltherestofthestory.Actually,Ididproceedfromthispointall
thewayintotheundergroundHopicityofPALATKWAPI.Iamputtingthewholestoryinabooktobeentitled"KOPAVI",whichI
amcurrentlyworkingon.

WefirstwentintoalargecaveroomcalledthePUSIVIandmyfriendandguidesaid,"WelcometoTUWANASAVI,thecenterofthe
world."Thelargeroomhadmanydoorsallaroundwithstrangemarkingsonthem.Karlexplainedthatthedoorswereanadded
precaution,incaseanunauthorizedpersonpenetratedtheareatheywouldn'tknowwhichdoorleadstothecity.Iunderstood
withouthimsayinganythingthatyoudidn'twanttoopenthewrongdoor.Karlwalkeduptooneofthedoors,placedhishandovera
symbolinthecenterandweenteredacleanwhiteroomwithalightpurpleglowcalledthePOWAMUWUWUCHPIorpurification
roomwhereallthenegativitiesandbacteriawereremovedfromourbodies,bothoutsideandinside.Onlythencouldweenterthe
cityofPalatkwapi.
ThereissomuchIwanttoask.Idon'tknowwheretostart.IsPalatkwapilocatedinsidethesubterraneanworldoftunnelsorisitlocated

No.Theskyisabeautifulblue,nocloudsandthesunwasstationaryinthesky.TheairwasthefreshestI'dbreathed.
Canyoudescribewhatthecitylookslike?
Sure.ThehouseswereallbuiltintheGreekstylewithcolumnsandredtileroofs.Theroomsareallopenandairywithnoglassin
theopenwindows.Therearegardenswithbrightbloomingflowersandplantseverywhere.Itisveryquiet,otherthanthesoftrush
ofwindwhichwasconstant.IlearnedthiswindiscalledAPONIVIandispulledinfromtheNorthandSouthpolaropeningsby
machineswhicharepoweredbytheinnersun,thenblownbackthroughtunnelstothesurfaceoftheearthinhundredsofplaces.
Thissystemwasdesignedtocompensateforthegravitationalpullandcentrifugalforceoftheearthandtheheatofthesuninorder
tomaintainthegravityandaconstanttemperatureof76degrees.
