PROJECT TOPIC

Design and Construction of Microcontroller based Lift Overload Counter / Bidirectional

Lift Visitor Counter
Abstract:

Display counters are popular for experimentation as well as for practical projects. This project is
about a bidirectional lift counter/lift overload counter that is inexpensive and relatively simple,
yet provides an introduction to hardware and software techniques that are applicable to more
full-featured displays. As the name implies, it restricts the elevator from transporting a number of
people above the maximum prescribed limit. This bidirectional lift counter/lift overload counter
is a reliable circuit that takes over the task of counting number of persons in / visitors to the lift
very accurately. The circuit works on the principle of IR sensing. Two sets of IR sensors
consisting of an IR LED are placed at two ends. Output from each sensor is fed to the
microcontroller. When somebody enters into the lift then the counter is incremented by one and
when any one leaves the lift then the counter is decremented by one. The total number of persons
inside the lift is displayed on the LCD display. When the person count goes beyond specified
limit the red LED starts blinking, as overload indication. This can be used in following scenarios:
This counter is used for counting number of objects passed through a point.
It is used to count number of persons entering a room/ inside a mall.
Also can be used in political buildings for security purpose.
