Blocking of the artery can lead to:
- heart attack (myocardial infarction)
- death to cells in the brain
- Damage to the endothelial lining of the artery due to smoking / high blood
pressure
- inflammatory response where white blood cells move into the artery wall
- cholesterol builds up and leads to the formation of atheroma
- build up of calcium salts and fibres lead to plaque formation which narrows
