It could dramatically reduce the cost of long distance
calls.
What do codecs do ?
The compressed data is then broken into packets and sent
across the internet. At the other end,it is reconverted into audio
data.
How does VoIP deal with the problem of packet loss ?
VoIP deals with loss by dividing the data into 30milisecond packets.
How does VoIP combat jiter ?
VoIP uses a buffer at the receiving end to store and
sepuence packets. In this way , the differences are smoothed
out but this can cause delays.
What is latency ?
Latency is the delay between the packets reaching the
receiver and you hearing the sound. If the delay is too long ,it
makes conversation difficult.

The GPS was developed by the US military to pinpoint
locations. It consists of 24 earth-orbiting satellites 17,000
km above the earth. Each satellite broadcast a coded
radio signal indicating the time and the satellites exact
position. The satellite have atomic clocks accurate to one
second every 70,000 years.
A GPS receiver contains a microprocessor which compares
signals from at least three satellite to calculate the
latitude, longitude and altitude of the receiver. Apart from
military uses, GPS is used for orienting hiker, aiding the
navigation of ships, tracking trucks and buses, and
locating stolen cars.
