Problem - How many four-digit positive integers have at least one digit that is a 2 or a 3?
ConjectureNumber of 4 digit positive integers in total:
9 * 10 * 10 * 10 = 9000
This is because there are 9 possibilities for the first digit (cant be zero), and 10 possibilities for
the other digits.
Number of 4 digit numbers that do not include a 2 or 3:
7 * 8 * 8 * 8 = 3584
This is because there are 7 possibilities for the first digit (cant be 0,2, or 3), and 8 for the other
digits (cant be 2 or 3).
Number of 4 digit numbers include at least one 2 or 3:
9000 3584 = 5416
The number of all the 4 digit numbers minus the number of 4 digit numbers without a 2 or a 3
would be all the 4 digit numbers with at least one 2 or 3.
Generalization
I would see how increasing the number digits in the number would effect the amount of numbers
(ex. How many 5 digit integers have at least one digit that is a 2 or 3?) and see how changing the
amount of numbers the integers have (maybe 2,3, or 4 instead of just 2 or 3). Also find an
equation for; How many n digit integers have at least one digit that is 1,2,3,4. (depending on

y). With this equation it should be possible to solve for; How many 6 digit integers have at least
one digit that is a 1,2,3,4, or 5?
