We start our journey at bustling

Boundary Street. My parents
remember a factory garden that
used to front Boundary Street. Sadly
I only know a 70s administration
building. Thankfully we now have the
opportunity to see what my parents
remember and look across an active,
open green to the original Peters Ice
Cream factory. Its character defined by
stories.

The open space is similar in proportion

but new; re-envisaged; the old fence
has gone. It is more like a Common
than a fenced factory garden I like
this, it is something that is shared. A
public gathering place for meeting and
catching up with friends and family.
The design is lush, green, informal and
relaxed. A wonderful addition to the
activity along Boundary Street.

My friend arrives and we walk towards

the Ice Cream Factory. What draws
my attention is the sound of moving
water and the noticeable coolness that
I feel as we walk under a planted trellis
casually filled with hanging ferns and
tropical plants. This looks to be the
perfect place to grab a bite to eat while
you are on the move.
The edges are activated with quick eat
options for local workers with seats
in the shade of dappled light. Interest
is provided by the falling water that
seems to flow from the mounded grass
of the Common. Its so great to hear the
children laughing as they play near the
water, much like youd expect at a creek
edge.

Before we take our walk through the

Common, I meet my friend at the statuesque
Moreton Bay Fig that marks the southern
corner of The Common. Its a cool, shady
place to sit on the edge of the footpath.
While I wait, I notice some writing along the
ground and up the side of the seat. It tells
me of the cultural significance of this type of
tree to West End and the Turrbal People, as
well as more recent Boundary Street stories
of our Aboriginal community.

As we rest, we notice the reflection of water
coming down some steps. It draws us closer.
As we near the water my eye follows the
water course up the natural fall of the
site. We discover another factory building,
another beautiful artefact, with a sign
revealing it as the Cone Factory.
We climb the stairs past a group of people
sitting, talking, catching the northern sunlight
as they look across the square, the space
around the Factory starts to unfold.

As I look over the water past the locals reading the

paper on the grass, I notice a restaurant spilling into
the shade of a collection of frangipani trees. It seems
to be full of locals and reminds me of the backyards
I see around West End. What a great place to catch
up with friends for lunch I must remember to come
back.

We arrive at the foot of the Ice Cream Factory.

It really is an artefact. It has a patina defined by
its character, much like the Power House in New
Farm, with its hard industrial materials. Where
new elements have had to replace old, they too
have the same character but with a contemporary
tone. What interests me is the vegetation around
the building that lightly brushes the factory and
softens its industrial nature.
A beautiful tree has been placed as a marker: a
meeting place at the intersection of lanes that
link the West Village with the surrounding streets.
We see friends sitting on the seat around the tree
catching up and taking in the view back across the
Common to Boundary Street beyond.

Edgy, gritty, industrial cool - Factory Lane is West Villages true working lane
With newly restored industrial edges, Factory lane picks up the industrial aesthetic and becomes WVs
chic, authentic working lane. Think Flinders Lane Melbourne - small bars, up & comingrestaurants, gallery
openings which spill onto the laneway at night. Its flexible design allows for markets, festivals, temporary
events - Factory Lane is the spine WVs laneway events spill from.

What a space. Drawn together by two heritage

buildings. The Cone Factory with its proud
faade, sitting across from the working
edge of the old ice cream factory dock. It
is relatively quiet at the moment, but I can
imagine this place coming alive around dinner
with a few key signature restaurants in the old
buildings and wine bars in the small spaces
between.
What makes the space is the arrangement
of the residential buildings. They are not
buildings simply dropped in to this space,
their form appears to grow out of the ground
and lead your eye through the space. And
where light is needed they separate, allowing
the sky to feature.

Looking back towards

The Common, I notice a
rooftop terrace above the
collection of frangipani
trees I spotted earlier in my
journey. This is fascinating,
a rooftop terrace in the
canopy of the large trees
planted in the Common.
What a vantage point to
look down at the activity
of the Common, Boundary
Street andcity skyline
beyond.

Just beside the Cone Factory I spot

a break between the edge of the
Factory and the wine bar beneath
the apartment building. On the
wall that leads you up the lane I
see a mural that says this is West
Villages original laneway.
It is compressed, textured and
urban. It has backlit brickwork that
intrigues. What a great way for
the residents of Wilson Street and
the apartments above to make their
way down to the Common.

Drawing my eye up to the sky between
two calm residential apartment buildings
are another set of stairs where rich, deep
landscaping merge with the industrial
character of Factory Lane.

I find myself at the back of the Ice Cream Factory

elevated above another significant public gesture. The
Steps. They are large, north facing and designed to
provide both physical and social connections. They
remind me of the Spanish Steps in Rome.

An inspired vertical landscape visually and

physically links this space to Little Jane
Lane. My friend tells me that this is the way
her sister cuts through when collecting her
son from Primary School, before stopping at
the supermarket.

What impresses me is the

mix of activity that lines the
edges of the spaces that I have
walked. The dock of the Ice
Cream factory along Factory
Lane is another example. As I
walk through the lane, the dock
evolves from a spill out space
for a bar to break-out space for
a gallery and a couple of other
creative enterprises.

I love how they have become a gathering and meeting

space for sitting, interacting and observing the theatre
of West End life. Making such an active use of the
natural hillside, as they undulate in a way that creates
their own pathway across the site.

The subtropical piazza, Peters square offers a truly new archetype for Australia

BCC DA

Rich with activity and texture and surrounded by terracing, Peters Square is the contained working heart of
West Village. Flanked with retail and fresh produce, this is the market square fine-tuned to our climate and
lifestyle. Shaded seating with views across the square and up the laneways are the perfect place to meet up
with friends, or stop and have an ice cream.

Looking down The Steps is Peters

Square, a lively market square. Ive
heard theres often a local produce
market here, but today its filled with
live music. Its where everyday life
and convenience merges into a totally
immersive experience.

A stage space forms a focal point to

the square a place where kids love to
pretend they are performing to a crowd
and the local school band performs. Its
a great space. It feels busy and hums like
a true market square should.

Sub-tropical fruit and herbs grow in

planter beds and scent the air beside
outdoor dining and relaxed public
seating. Lush landscape weaves its way
down the broad steps into the heart of
the square and provides a soft shady
edge to West Ends new theatre in the
round.

Walking to the edge of the square, and

around the last undiscovered corner
of the Ice Cream Factory, is West
Villages mini high street. This is the
main passage between The Common
and Peters Square. The articulated
shop fronts create a distinction between
each side of the laneway the heritage
texture of the Ice Cream Factory stands
on one side and the modern retail on
the other.

Once again, my eyes are drawn to the

sky and the northern sun welcomed
into the square between the apartment
buildings. As I look up ahead I see
Mollison Street in the distance and a
row of sophisticated shop fronts. They
form an elegant rhythm of fine grain
retail following through to Mollison
Street, then Montague and beyond.

Having arrived back at the Meeting

Place the tree is now lit with a warm
glow of lighting, my friend says goodbye and heads down to the carpark
through the gallery space at the base
of the Ice Cream Factory. As I head
off to the Cultural Precinct for an
exhibition, I notice a lane takes me
straight to the Gunshop Cafe. This is
easy. From the Gunshop, I can go up
Melbourne Street and I am there. The
lane opens and compresses as I walk
towards Melbourne Street.
The edges are flanked with seating
and landscaping. Like all the other
spaces I have enjoyed at West Village,
they are simultaneously inviting, lush
and urban. Looking back, this is my
last impression of West Village and it
is dramatic.

I find myself under the awning of the Gunshop

looking up the gentle incline of Mollison St
leading towards the River and notice the
stepping of the buildings along the edge of
the street. The banding of the street edge
compliments the scale of the Gunshop.
People idle around looking at shop windows,
chatting, drinking coffee, happily waiting for
the City Glider to pull up. I cant help but
think to myself, this is truly one of West Ends
great places.
