POLYESTER RESINS

Polyester Resin is a liquid which will

cure to a solid when the hardener is
added. It has been specially
formulated to cure at room
temperature. The hardener, MEKP
(Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide) is
added to cure, or harden the resin.

Polyester resins are popular and widely

used, especially in the marine industry to
shape and form hulls and outer layers of
ships.
Other industries also employ polyester resin
They are used in the auto industry, as an
adhesive and even as wood filler. The
following are some of the properties
exhibited by polyester resins.

Polyester resins are, across the board,

pale in color. This could be a pale gray
color to a dull and diluted white.

Polyester Resins are the most widely

used resins in the composites industry.
Sometimes referred to as Fiberglass
Resins, Polyester Resins are less
expensive, offer some corrosion
resistance, and are more forgiving than
epoxies. The majority of all fiberglass
parts are
constructed using Polyester Resins
because they are easy to use, fast
curing, and tolerant of temperature and
catalyst extremes.

Properties can be formulated for your

product specification targets. Typical
SMC properties with standard 28% glass
reinforcement result in 12,000psi tensile
strength and 25,000psi flexural strength.
Strength-weight ratio is very good and
because of its low density (from 1.70
grams/cc formulated) it often replaces
metallic parts that are close to five times
heavier.

Polyester resins are unsaturated

synthetic resins formed by the reaction
of dibasic organic acids and polyhydric
alcohols. Maleic Anhydride is a
commonly used raw material with diacid
functionality. Polyester resins are used in
sheet moulding compound, bulk
moulding compound and the toner of
laser printers.
