Lupe and Carlos Cardenas have been living with their son Travis in a less than adequate apartment
for 2 years. The apartment is in disrepair cue to an inattentive landlord and they often worry about
Travis’ safety due to mold and exposed wires in the home. On top of that, their rent has recently gone
up, causing additional financial strain on the young family
In September of 2013, the Cardenas family was evacuated from their apartment due to the flood. They
sought shelter in Carlos’ parent's home during that time and ended up being trapped there for several
days due to road closures, Carlos was unable to get to his workplace and, as a result, he lost his job.
In September of 2014, the Cardenas family had recovered enough to seek out a better opportunity
so they decided to apply lo become Habitat Homeowners. When they heard about the program they
stated that they were, “excited to know that there was such a program thal could make this cream
come true.” After completing all of their sweat equity hours, the Cardenas’ will move into their new
Habitat home in the spring of 2016.
