Gray shines at Rehoboth

didnt set out to be the champion of
the 14th annual Rehoboth Ramble
5K road race on Saturday morning.
It just worked out that way.
Gray, 16, a junior at McBain
and a cross country runner for
Coach Johnny Ensing, was more
interested in his time than his
position at the start. He wanted
to finish the course that winds
through downtown Lucas in less
than 19 minutes. He didnt quite
reach that goal but he did cross the
finish line ahead of everyone else
in the field of 60 runners and that
was a nice consolation.
My goal was to come in under 19 minutes and I was a little
slower than that but I cant be
unhappy with how I finished,
Gray said afterward.
Gray and fellow McBain cross
country teammate, classmate and
friend Eli Nelson were the top two
runners at the final turn.
Eli was right behind me and he

said, Lets finish strong, and that
pushed me at the end, Gray said.
It was nice having Eli there.
Gray, whose personal-best time
of 18:52 came in last years
regional cross country meet, is
participating in a rigorous summer
workout regimen that includes a
goal of 300 miles of road work.
The road race was part of that.
It was just a normal run, like
another day of work, Gray said
with a smile.
Eli, 16, who is also going into
his junior season at McBain, is
having a pretty good summer so
far. He won the Geers Farm 5K
a few weeks ago and came in as
runner-up at Lucas.
Going into the race, I figured if
I kept up with Gray, Id be OK,
Eli said. We pushed each other a
little bit during the last mile or so.
I knew the faster Gray went, the
faster I would want to go.
Eli was happy with his time.
It actually went a little better
than I thought, he said. I came

in under 20 minutes and I was
happy with that.
Another McBain cross country
runner, Brianna Eisenga, came in
fourth place overall and was the
2016 female champion in a time
of 22:16.
This was my first time doing
this race, said Brianna, who
turns 14 this week. I wanted to
do more road races this summer
and someone suggested this one
and Im glad they did. I liked it.
Brianna, whose father Kyle
Eisenga was a standout runner for
McBain back in the day, was happy that her uncle Brent Eisenga,
who finished third in 21:50, wore
a very bright yellow shirt during
the road race.
My uncle Brent was wearing
this really bright shirt and I knew
that as long as I could see it I was
doing pretty good, she said with
a laugh.

Manton runners like

Greatest Fourth race

LAKE CITY Some teens from Manton were among the field of
700 participants in this years Greatest Fourth in the North road race
event last week.
Ashley Parker, 15, and Isaac Raden, 14 participated for the second
year in a row while Paige Swiriduk,14, took part for the first time.
Ashley is a sophomore while Paige and Isaac are both incoming
freshmen at Manton High School. The three are friends and fellow
runners who will be doing leg work for Manton cross country coach
Jeff Harding when school resumes again.
I really like it here, said Ashley, who made a splash for Manton
in track and cross country both as a freshman last school year. Its
organized and well-marked and everybodys friendly. Plus, theres a
lot of people and its not that far to come. Its just a good atmosphere.
Ashley fared well in the 5K, taking second in her age group (Female
11-15) in a time of 22:58, good for 52nd overall out of 358 runners.
Paige and Isaac both ran in the 10K and they had similar goals: to
beat each other.
Paige took first in her age group in a time of 42:57, good for a very
respectable 14th place overall out of 98 runners. Isaac also came in

Sirpilla enjoys visits to LC

LAKE CITY Coming north
from Wyoming (near Grand Rapids) is a summer tradition for Lake
City graduate Jeff Sirpilla.
Sirpilla, a former standout track
and cross country athlete for the
Trojans, likes to visit around the
time of the Greatest Fourth and
take part in the road race.
Its something I still enjoy doing, Sirpilla said with a smile in
the city park following the road
race last Monday, wife Allison by
his side. Theres nothing quite
like the road race here. You get to
see friends and family and you get
to support the athletic boosters at
the same time. Its a great thing.
Sirpilla, an advanced quality engineer for an auto manufacturer in
Grand Rapids, has kept himself in
pretty good shape since graduating nearly 20 years ago. He came
in second place in his age division
(Male 35-39) and 41st overall out
of hundreds in the 5K, finishing in
a time of 22:26.
He and Allison used to come
north more frequently but havent
been making the trip since Jeffs
dad Jim Sirpilla passed away a
few years ago. But being part of
the Fourth road race has not lost
its appeal. Jeff has taken part in
the road about 15 times.
This is one of the best races
and one of the best courses, said

Allison, 27, has come to enjoy
the Greatest Fourth road race
experience also. She got into
running a few years to share the
activity with Jeff and she hasnt
looked back.
He basically gave me the option: cheer for me or run, Allison
said with a chuckle. I decided
to run.
She took part in her very first 5K
in Lake City two years ago. This
year she graduated to the 10K race
and fared pretty well, coming in
60th place overall and sixth in her
age bracket in a time of 56:43.
This is a great course, she
said. The atmosphere is really
nice and its great to be part of it
because it gives back to the community.
I did the 5K last year but I wanted to challenge myself more this
year so I did the 10K, explained
Isaac, who has a Lake City address
but attends Manton school.
My biggest goal was not to
let Paige beat me but I guess I

didnt quite get it, he added with
a chuckle.
Isaac said he enjoys taking part
in the road race.
Its pretty fun, he said. There
are different places where theres
a mix in the trails and theres a
good amount of shade.
For her part, Paige was looking
for a good workout in the 10K and
she got it.
I hadnt run the 10K distance before so I was pretty excited about it, she said. I really
liked the course. You get to go
by the water and theres plenty
of shade. And its kind of neat
coming down the street at the
end and seeing all the people.

McBain teammate Megan Taylor
was close behind her.
I sensed Megan behind me
and that helped me to keep up my
pace, she said.
Brianna will be taking part in
the Crystal Lake Team Marathon
later this summer with teammates
Klaudia OMalley, Brendan Sutten and Alex Hamilton.
Im hoping that I can get a little
faster this summer, she said.
Megan Taylor came in fifth
(22:59) behind Gray, Eli, Brent
Eisenga and Brianna. Jacob
Mayle, yet another McBain student, was sixth (24:27) followed
by Carrie Rozeveld (24:43) in
seventh, Dan Schmidt (25:00),
Whitney Soule (25:14) and Haley
Swiger (25:31).
Brenda Pylkas was the Athena

winner this year in 30:15.
The youngest runner in the field
on Saturday was effervescent
7-year-old Brooklyn Eisenga,
the younger sister of Brianna
and 10-year-old Baily and the
daughter of Kyle and Roxanne.
Brooklyn poured it on at the end
and turned in a very respectable
time of 30:52, winning a medal
in her age group.
Brooklyn said she likes running and it shows. She also came
in second place in her age group in
a race earlier this summer at Evart.
When asked how it felt taking
first place in her age group on
Saturday, Brooklyn smiled and
she it felt good.
I had to stop and tie my shoe
and that slowed me down, she
said, but it was still fun.
The race was held for the third

year in memory of the late Rev.
Dave Sterk, the longtime beloved
pastor of the Rehoboth church
who lost his battle with cancer in
April of 2013.
This race is for Dave now,
said Race Director Johnny Ensing. He was a big part of this
race for many years. This is a
community event that brings
people and families together and
thats what Dave loved. We dont
have as many runners as we used
to because of some competing
events but its still a great time.

Tell your family story

Your story: One of the most important things you can do for your
genealogy and for your familys
future genealogy is write your
story. Write more than just birth
dates, marriage dates and your
childrens birth dates.
Write down some memories. It
doesnt have to be perfect. It can
just be many short stories.
If I was interviewing you about
your life history, I would probably
ask you for some memories from
your childhood to begin with.
What is your favorite memory
from your childhood? What is
your earliest memory? Did you

live on a farm or in a town?
What pets did you have? Did
you like to swim or roller skate
or play games, etc? Do you have
a scar or a specific incident? What
schools did you go to? When did
you graduate? Did you go to college? Did you excel academically
in school or in sports?
How did you meet your spouse?
Write some fun stories about
your children. What are your
memories of your parents and/
or siblings? What hobbies do
you have? Where all have you

worked? What organizations do

you belong to? Have you had any
serious illnesses?
This may sound like a lot of
ego but its not. It is your history. Leave this legacy for your
children, grandchildren, and great
grandchildren and the greats who
will never know you personally.
Think how excited they would
be if they were doing genealogy

Expansion of Chronic Wasting Disease core area

LANSING The Michigan
Natural Resources Commission expanded the Core Chronic
Wasting Disease (CWD) Area
to include 17 townships. This
area, which will continue to be
referred to as Deer Management
Unit (DMU) 333, now will consist of Lansing, Meridian, Williamstown, Delhi, Alaiedon and
Wheatfield townships in Ingham
County; DeWitt, Bath, Watertown, Eagle, Westphalia, Riley,
Olive and Victor townships in
Clinton County; Woodhull Township in Shiawassee County, and
Oneida and Delta townships in
Eaton County.
The CWD Management Zone
also has expanded; it now will
include the remainder of Clinton,

Eaton, Ingham and Shiawassee
counties, as well as all of Ionia
County. The expanded Management Zone will be referred to as
DMU 419.
With the detection of CWDpositive deer in the southern part
of Clinton County, we need to
better understand the magnitude
of the disease in those areas,
said Chad Stewart, Department of
Natural Resources deer specialist.
Expanding our surveillance to
include those areas is key at this
point, and we need help from
landowners and hunters within
the expanded zone to help us with
this effort.

All live free-ranging deer from
within the CWD Management
Zone or Core CWD Area are
prohibited from being rehabilitated. Permittees located within
the CWD Management Zone or
Core CWD Area may no longer
rehabilitate deer.
CWD affects members of the

deer family, including elk and
moose. It is caused by the transmission of infectious, self-multiplying proteins (prions) contained
in saliva and other body fluids
of infected animals. Since the
May 2015 discovery of chronic
wasting disease in a free-ranging,
Michigan white-tailed deer, more
than 5,000 deer have been tested
for CWD in order to gauge the
extent of the disease across the
landscape. Of those tested, seven
deer were confirmed positive for
the disease in Clinton and Ingham
counties.

Who am I?

Good Morning Missaukee County Readers. Here it is the middle

of the month already and time to get busy enjoying a good old
fashioned summertime. Its also time for you to guess the name of
this person. Here are the clues.
I was born on May 27, 1963, in Traverse City. My mothers name
is June and my step dads name is Larry. I grew up in Jenison, just
outside and west of Grand Rapids, with a brother and three sistersSchrie, Debbie, Mike, and Teresa.
I graduated from Jenison High in 1982. My best memory of
school is attending art classes. I enjoy working with my hands and
my first job out of high school was in a clock factory in Kentwood.
I moved north to Lake City when I was 21 and worked for my aunt
in the summers. She always had a big flower garden and I learned
all the names of her garden flowers and sometimes I worked in
Christmas trees.
I married Tom in 1987 and we had three girls, Rachel, Lee Ann,
and Megan. Mostly, I was a stay at home mom until my divorce.
While the girls were growing up, I picked up odd jobs painting
houses, cleaning homes, and gardening. I am a very proud and
happy mother looking at my three girls and what they have accomplished with their educations. One is a pathologist, the second
an occupational therapist and the third a professional stay at home
mom.
Perhaps living on a farm most of their growing up years and taking care of their horses influenced them. They all worked and paid
for much of their own education. I am a fairly new grandmother
with two grandchildren, one, a year and a half old and the other
two months old.
When the kids grew up and left home the house was too large
for me to take care of. When it sold, I started looking around for a
brand new profession. Over a period of several years, I had my eye
on a purchase that would become my most enjoyable profession. It
goes back to my experiences at my grandmas. I will tell you about
that in a moment.
I am five foot three with brown eyes and blond hair, drive a green
2002 Explorer and I go home to greet my brown and white dog
named Riley. He is smart and likes to chase anything smaller than
him like, mice, rats, and squirrels. He is what I call a rat Russell
Terrier and a good hunter too.
I work seven days a week, nine to six. Thats what you have to
do when you run your own business. So during that time I have
developed hobbies like learning about redecorating furniture, rehabbing antiques and working with 25 vendors. I read a lot, anything
that I can learn from such as research on woodworking and crafts.
By now you can probably guess my name. If not, here are more
clues. I love music. In fact, I have music playing all the time in my
shop. The sweet smell of cedar trees, I am told, brings back many
Up North memories for many of my customers. I love being in
my shop and greeting people interested in the things that excite me
from my time with my aunt.
I enjoy mystery movies and when I get the time off in the winter,
after a long busy summer, I enjoy traveling to Ft. Meyers, Florida.
I think one of the times of my life that affected me the most was
watching the slow death, over nine months, of my favorite uncle
due to brain cancer. I have learned not to think or to worry about

I heard at a meeting this morning a mans humble words: I
suffered from an ego run riot
masquerading, trying to cover
my deep feelings of insecurity
and fear. This guy had broken
through his own veils. And what
a glowing man!
Sometime all I can do is breathe
in, breathe out. Great gulps of air...
... And dream of a possible
world where we can reach for
DISEASE

animal or from handling venison.

humans or domestic animals.

July 13, 1916
Elmer Minthorn mail carrier on
the Star City route, met with an
accident Saturday. While watering
his team at Missaukee, hitched
to the closed stage, but with the
bits out of the horses mouths,
one of the animals took fright at
something.
The first jump or two overturned the rig, in which was a lady
passenger and a child. The horses
broke loose from the carriage, and

one of them ran a couple miles
before it was recaptured. The
passengers escaped with a few
bruises, and the rig and team, were
not much hurt.

Numerous accidents The first
(accident) resulted in death, and a
second in a broken leg.
Last Friday, Elisha Nichols, a
farmer living three miles and a
half straight east of Lake City, was
knocked from a load of hay and
picked up with a fractured skull.
He died Sunday, without recovering consciousness.
No one saw Mr. Nichols fall,
and the exact cause is unknown. A
neighbor, a Mr. Haver was in the
mow but did not see the accident.
Mrs. Nichols was just outside the
barn, but not where she could
see it.
Nichols was handling the hay
fork on the load, standing on the
barn floor. The rope to which the
horse was attached, came in the
door, passed through a pulley,
and then straight up to near the

short post, which must have been
insecurely fastened.
Shortly after the accident to
Mr. Nichols, Michael, a neighbor,
heard the news and started over
to the Nichols home to see if he
could be of any assistance. On the
way, he was overtaken by another
neighbor, Theo Frey, bound on
the same errand, driving an automobile while Michael was on
foot. Michael is a man of about
70 years of age, and is quite deaf
so he did not hear the car coming,
and unfortunately started to cross
the road without looking around;
when the car was so close upon
him that the driver was unable
to stop.
Mr. Frey picked up the injured
man and took him home, when it
was found that two bones in the
ankle were fractured. The funeral
for Mr. Nichols took place from
the residence, Monday and was
largely attended by the neighborhood. During the service at the
house, Irvin Nichols, son of the
deceased, was taken quite se-

me then you know that I love to
be with people and everyone is
different and interesting. When I
am through work I am totally used
up and thats when I enjoy going
home and just relax.
I am a very private home life
person in regard to my own life
but at the same time I feel that
nothing in the world stops me
from getting what I want. I work
hard to get it. I want my family
to be happy and peaceful and
verely with a nervous cramp and

was seriously ill for a time.
Deceased was probably 65
years of age, and leaves a wife
and two children, Irvin and Mrs.
Vadna.
A child of a family named
Dunseth who lives on North
Gladwin Street fell from a childs
express wagon, striking on a cement walk and cracking a bone
in the jaw.
While preparing to paint a
building on the Gray Bros. ranch
near Merritt, Monday noon, F.M.
Nye of this place, fell from a ladder, a distance of eight or ten feet,
striking on his head, receiving
injuries that will confine him to
his home for a few days.
He was unable to explain his
fall, but was probably in part over
come with the heat. Mr. Nye was
injured by a fall from a scaffold
last winter, and has never wholly
recovered from the effects, probably.
Chas. Fitzgerald was with Mr.
Nye at Merritt, on the same job,
and brought the injured man home
in his car.
