Manton teens, from left, Isaac Raden, Ashley Parker and Paige Swiriduk enjoyed taking part in
the annual Greatest Fourth road race event. (photo by Mike Dunn)
LAKE CITY Some teens from Manton were among the field of
700 participants in this years Greatest Fourth in the North road race
event last week.
Ashley Parker, 15, and Isaac Raden, 14 participated for the second
year in a row while Paige Swiriduk,14, took part for the first time.
Ashley is a sophomore while Paige and Isaac are both incoming
freshmen at Manton High School. The three are friends and fellow
runners who will be doing leg work for Manton cross country coach
Jeff Harding when school resumes again.
I really like it here, said Ashley, who made a splash for Manton
in track and cross country both as a freshman last school year. Its
organized and well-marked and everybodys friendly. Plus, theres a
lot of people and its not that far to come. Its just a good atmosphere.
Ashley fared well in the 5K, taking second in her age group (Female
11-15) in a time of 22:58, good for 52nd overall out of 358 runners.
Paige and Isaac both ran in the 10K and they had similar goals: to
beat each other.
Paige took first in her age group in a time of 42:57, good for a very
respectable 14th place overall out of 98 runners. Isaac also came in

Allison, 27, has come to enjoy
the Greatest Fourth road race
experience also. She got into
running a few years to share the
activity with Jeff and she hasnt
looked back.
He basically gave me the option: cheer for me or run, Allison
said with a chuckle. I decided
to run.
She took part in her very first 5K
in Lake City two years ago. This
year she graduated to the 10K race
and fared pretty well, coming in
60th place overall and sixth in her
age bracket in a time of 56:43.
This is a great course, she
said. The atmosphere is really
nice and its great to be part of it
because it gives back to the community.
I did the 5K last year but I wanted to challenge myself more this
year so I did the 10K, explained
Isaac, who has a Lake City address
but attends Manton school.
My biggest goal was not to

This morning I read this message from Natasha Howell, at
right.
And this,
This country was founded, yes
on optimism and pluralism, but
also on slave labor, exploitation,
violence, dehumanization. Dont
get bogged down in the guilt or
shame of this history, but know
it. Your story, our story, is a part

Things are not getting worse,
they are getting uncovered. We

how history demonstrates inhumane examples, over and over, of
one-upmanship, of the continual
narratives, WE ARE SUPERIOR.
We believe better than Muslims... We deserve more land
because we are more powerful...
You homos are degenerate; lesbians are freaks... You addicts are
weak and immoral.... I'd never
live next door to blacks."
I heard at a meeting this morning a mans humble words: I
suffered from an ego run riot
masquerading, trying to cover
my deep feelings of insecurity
and fear. This guy had broken
through his own veils. And what
a glowing man!
Sometime all I can do is breathe
in, breathe out. Great gulps of air...
... And dream of a possible
world where we can reach for
