Leicester

Leicester is a city and unitary authority area in the East Midlands of England, and the county town
of Leicestershire. 1The city lies on the River Soar and at the edge of the National Forest. This city
has a maritime climate with mild to warm summers and cool winters, rain spread throughout the
year, and low sunshine levels2.It has a population of 330,000; it is considered as one of the most
ethnically diverse cities in the United Kingdom, because almost the half of the population is
immigrant.3 Leicester is modern and rich in culture; it has a lot of tourist attractions and traditions
with multicultural activities.

Events
The Pride parades (also known as pride festivals) are Leicesters annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and
Transgender festivals. The parade is decorated with colourful balloons and banners, and people
celebrate the diversity and they express freely, showing pride and respect.
Leicester Caribbean Carnival is one of the largest multicultural events in the East Midlands,
celebrating the diversity of cultures while keeping the cultural traditions of the Caribbean alive;

the event shows all art forms and ensures the true meaning of the carnival.
The Leicester Comedy Festival is another event in Leicester that now attracts over 60,000 people
which is seen as one of the 'top 5 comedy festivals in the world'. 5
Leicester International Music Festival is a largely music festival that shows Leicesters strong
musical tradition and works with the finest musicians and composers. This festival continues to
attract regional, national and international recognition for the high quality of the musical
performances and for the world-class artists taking part.

Attractions
The National Space Centre is an important attraction dedicated to space exploration and space
science. It has many galleries of exhibits and activities for the visitors like space flight, astronomy
and cosmology.
The Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower is a very popular landmark in Leicester and is the meeting
point of the city. It was designed by Joseph Goddard and was built to honour four famous
benefactors from Leicesters history. A lot of celebrations are held around the Clock Tower like
Christmas festivities each year.

The Leicester Market is the biggest outdoor market in Europe, it has more than 200 stalls and it is
around 800 years old. It provides the shoppers an airy environment to buy fresh food particularly
fruit and vegetables, but also seafood, cheese, fresh bread, cooked meats, etc.
The Curve Theatre is a spectacular art theatre, it does not have a backstage area and people are
allowed to enjoy the theatre behind the scene or where they want, people of all ages can
participate in and learn from the arts, which provide the creation of theatrical experiences.

Sports
Leicester has some fine sporting prowess to be proud of. Leicester City F.C is a professional football
club based at the King Power Stadium, the team was champion at the Premier League for the
2015-2016 season. They hold the joint record for the most second-tier title triumphs, having won
the First Division six times.
Leicester Tigers are the most successful English club since the introduction of league rugby, they
have a record 10 times English champions and last won the Premiership title in the 2012-13
season. They also have appeared in a record nine successive Premiership finals, from 2005 to 2013.
The Tigers have never finished a league season below 6th position, and are one of only four teams
which never have been relegated from the top division. 6
