An overview for M1 examination February 2013-2014

Presentation and discussion:


This part of the examination will be dedicated to your Finke faade project. In the
examination day you will present the assigned task for this module as a group, after
the presentation there will be an individual discussion about some critical aspects in
the faced design principles and approaches. Your grade for this part will be awarded
according to the following:

Concept and the development process.


Final design and presentation quality.

Oral exam (questions about faades in general and Schco system in
particular) .

You should present the main facts, drawings and details of your concept in a short
presentation (10 min. max). Please practice your presentation and make sure to be
punctual; otherwise you might be interrupted by your tutor.

Your tutor will pose questions to you in spoken form regarding some topics and you
should answer the questions verbally in a sufficient knowledge regarding the topic.
The oral exam will cover the following topics:
1- Schco system:
the oral exam for this part will be some questions about Schco system that might
cover the following aspects:

the name of schco system parts;


the function of these parts;
the differences between a stick and a unitized system;
the types of a stick system curtain wall;
the main principle of water drainage in the curtail wall system;
the main principles of assembling a curtail wall system.
2- Glass:
the oral exam for this part will be some questions about Glass in general that might
cover the following aspects:

types of glass, tempered, laminated, etc;


the breakage character of each glass type;
the resistance of each type of glass;
types of coating;
in which level of the DGU do we apply coatings and why;
U values and G values;
Why it is not recommended to use fully tempered laminated glass when we use the
glass as the main structure;
What is the process of glass tempering?

3- Double skin facades:


the oral exam for this part will be some questions about Double skin facades:

what is a double skin faade;


what are the types of the double skin facades;
why do we use a double skin faade;
what are the disadvantages of a double skin faade;
where do we use a double skin faade (building type, location).

4- Steel vs. Aluminum curtain walls:


the oral exam for this part will be some questions about Steel VS. Aluminum curtain
walls, the discussion might cover the following aspects:

why are Aluminum curtain walls more common than steel curtain walls;
when do we use steel curtain walls;
what are the pros and cons of using steel curtain walls;
what are the pros and cons of using stainless steel in curtain walls;
the properties of each Aluminum and Steel in general? Density, thermal
conductivity, thermal expansion, melting point.
