Biodiesel is defined as the methyl ester of long chain of fatty acid. Biodiesel can be produced by
transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fat along with alcohol in the presence of suitable catalyst and
glycerol is the only by-product obtained from this reaction. Most common catalyst for biodiesel production is
homogeneous basic catalyst (NaOH, KOH). The alkaline catalyzed transesterification process can be affected by
differing parameter such as methanol to oil ratio, catalyst concentration and reaction time. The optimum
condition for the alkaline catalyzed transesterification including molar ratio of methanol to oil are 1:4, 1:5, 1:6
and NaOH catalyst concentration ( W/V ) of oil are 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, reaction temperature 55 0C and
stirring rate 400 rpm. It evokes less amount of CO2 and hydrocarbon particulate matter as compared to petroleum
based diesel and kept environment clean.
