Binomial Theorem Short-cuts

After studying Symmetry and dimension analysis in Maths, lets learn a new technique, which I
call Simulation. In this technique we will solve questions which involves variables like n, a, b,
and c. To understand it clearly we shall consider the following example from Binomial Theorem.

Question 1:
If (1 + ) = 0 + 1 + 2 2 + + , then the value of
3

2( 0 ) + 2 ( 1 ) + 3 ( 2 ) + 4 ( 3 ) .. is
(A)

2 0 2 1 3 2

By Simulation The above question is a weak question, as it allows me to validate the answer
by assuming n = 2 in the question and as we know that the value of
2

0 = 1,

1 = 2 and 2 2 = 1, the question will become

2(2 0 ) + 2 (2 2 ) = 2(1) + 2 (2) + 3 (1) = 2 + 3 + 3 =

n = 2, it will give

22 (2+3)1
2+1

19
3

and in option (b) if we put

19
3

. Rather this is true for every > 1, You can check it by

substituting = 3.

Question 2:
If (1 + ) = 0 + 1 + 2 2 + + , then the value of

0 2 1 + 3 2 + (1) +1 =
1

(A)

(B)

(C) +1

(D) 1

Solution: (C)
By Simulation, this question could be solved by integration also. But Ill discuss Simulation over
here. As the question is a general question, that means we can assume any value for n and can
detect the correct answer rather than deriving it completely. Let = 2. Then the question will
1

become 2 0 2 2 1 + 3 2 2 (to get the last term you should put n = 2 in the last term). As we
know that the value of 2 0 = 1,
2

1 = 2 and 2 2 = 1. On substituting these values Ill get

0 2 2 1 + 3 2 2 = 1 2 . 2 + 3 . 1 = 3 and if I substitute the same value of n is option then

Ill get
(A) 2

(B) 2

(C) 3

(D) 1

So the correct answer is (c) +1. You can repeat the same exercise by substituting the value of n
as 3. Rather this is true for = 48975 also, you can try if time permits.

Question 3:
0

If (1 + ) = 0 + 1 + 2 2 + , then the value of

(A)

2+1 1

(C) +1

(D) None of these

Solution: (C)
Let n = 2. Then the question will become

0
1

2
3

and its value will be

1+1
3

=3

and option (c) is giving 3. You should check it by substituting the value of n as 3.

Question 4:

If (1 + ) = =0 , then (1 + 1 ) (1 + 2 ) . . (1 +
0

(A) (1)!

(B)

(+1)1
(1)!

(C)

)=

(+1)

(D)

(+1)+1
!

Solution: (C)
1+2

By Simulation. Let n = 2. Then the question will become (

) (1 + 2) = (3). (2) = 2

Option (C) is giving that.

Question 5:
If (1 + ) = 0 + 1 + 2 2 + + , than the sum to (n + 1) terms of the following
series 30 81 + 132 183 + is
(A) 0

(B) 1

(C) 1

(D) None of these

Solution: (A)
By Simulation. Let n = 2. Then the question will become 30 81 + 132 = 3 16 + 13 = 0.
Hence option (A)
Please check for n = 3.

Question 6:
If (1 + ) = =0 , then the value of
0 + (0 + 1 ) + (0 + 1 + 2 ) + + (0 + 1 + 2 + + )
(A) 21

(B) ( + 2) 2

(C) 2

(D) ( + 2) 21

Solution: (D)
By Simulation, let n = 2. then the question will become 0 + (0 + 1 ) + (0 + 2 + 2 )
= 1 + (1 + 2) + (1 + 2 + 1) = 8.
Option (D) will give 8 on substituting n = 2.

Question 7:
If r and n are positive integers and 1 and if
(1 + ) = 0 + 1 + 2 2 + + , then the value of
(, ) + ( 1, ) + ( 2, ) + + (, ) is equal to
(A) 2

(B) ( + 1, + 1)

(C) ( + 1, )

(D) None of these

Solution: (B)
By Simulation, in this case there are two variables, n and r. Let us take = 3 and = 1.
Then the question will become (3, 1) + (2, 1) + (1, 1) = 3 + 2 + 1 = 6
So the correct answer is (b) ( + 1, + 1) as 4 2 = 6.
You can check for = 4 and = 1.

Question 8:
If (1 + ) = 0 + 1 + 2 2 + + , then the value of
0 + 31 + 52 + + (2 + 1) is equal to
(A) 2

(B) 2 + . 21

(C) 2 ( + 1)

(D) None of these

Solution: (C)
By Simulation, let = 2. then the question will become 1 + 3. (2) + 5 (1) = 12.
So correct answer would be (C) 22 (2 + 1) = 12.

Question 9:
If in the expansion of (1 + ) , a, b, c are three consecutive coefficients, then n =
(A)

++

(B)

2 +

2++

(C) 2

(D) None of these

Solution: (B)
By Simulation, put = 2, then expansion will become (1 + )2 and as we know that
2

0 = 1,

1 = 2 and 2 2 = 1, therefore values of = 1, = 2 and = 1. Then option

(C) will give the correct value of n. (i.e. 2) when we substitute the value of a, b and c.

Question 10:
If n is an integer greater than 1 and If (1 + ) = 0 + 1 + 2 2 + + , then the
value of 1 ( 1)+ 2 ( 2) + (1) ( ) =
(A)

(B) 0

(C) 2

(D) 2

Solution: (B)
By Simulation
Put n = 2, The Question will become = 2( 1) + 1 ( 2) = 0.
Hence correct answer is (B).

Question 11:
If (1 + ) = 0 + 1 + 2 2 + + , where > 2, then the value of the sum of
the series 20 0 20 1 + 20 2 20 3 + + 20 10 is(A) 20 10

(B)

1 20
10
2

(C) 0

(D)

20

10

Solution: (B)
By Simulation, since this question does not carry n, we will change it to a question based on

n. Put 20 as n and 10 as 2. Put n = 4, so that the question becomes

4

0 4 1 + 4 2 = 1 4 + 6 = 3 and option becomes

(A) 4 2

(B)

14
2
2

(C) 0

(D) 4 2

Hence (B) is the answer.

Question 12:

(A) 12 (212 1)

(B) 12 (211 1)

(C) 12 (211 + 1)

(D) None of these

Solution: (A)
By Simulation, as the question is not general (Based on n)
Changing the question (Making it a general question based on n)

(A)

+ + +1 and the option will become

(2+1 1)

(C) +1 (2 + 1)
Now put n = 2 and solve.
Correct answer would be (A)

(B) +1 (2 1)
(D) None of these

n that mean put 15 as .

(D) None of these

Now put n = 2 and solve.

Correct answer is (B)

Hence question will become (3) . 6 1 + (3)1 . 6 3 + (3)2 . 6 5
= 6 3.20 + 9.6 = 6 60 + 54 = 0
Hence correct option is (A).
