Worldmapper.org was really interesting with the information it provided
on different topics. These topics ranged from youth literacy to meat consumed, to even oil power. It definitely provided a lot of neat and different information for people to look at. Since Black Lives Matter is my social justice issue this semester, I wanted to look at some maps that pertained to the issue. Now I tried looking for racism as a topic and was unable to find any maps on that so I went with my next choice. Black Lives Matter was formed because of the death of an innocent African-American boy, I was looking for information to find out where North American fell for the violent deaths statistics. The two maps that I found on the website that were in close relation to my issue were Male Mortality 15-60 years old and Violent Deaths. What I found interesting on Male Mortality ages 15-60 was that the United States isnt on the list for the highest number of deaths for males in that age range. The number belongs to African territories. This was definitely a relief to me when I found this out. We live in a society where you cannot turn on the news without hearing about another shooting here or another school that went on lockdown, and even though we have big problems that need to be dealt with on our home front, it was reliving to know that we are not in that statistic. The next map did have a mention of North America. Again, the map was labeled Violent Deaths. Brazil and India had the most violent deaths on this list and North America was fourth in overall regions. This definitely was a let down when I found this information out. This statistic needs to change and Black Lives Matter is a driving force on why the change needs to happen and how this issue of violence needs to stop.
