Honeywell UOP Callidus also offers the Hemisflare with steam assist.
The steam distribution piping is inside the waste gas arm, with the conical
minimum steam establishes the Coanda Effect and burns all small waste
the mixing energy on the Coanda bowl. When compared to the amount
of steam required from a traditional flare tip such as an inner steam style
efficiency, high smokeless capacity, low noise, and low radiation for a
tip, the Hemisflare tip can use 30% less steam for an equivalent heat
medium pressure steam is not required for effective mixing of the flare gas.
Previous tip designs rely heavily on the momentum created by the high
velocity (higher pressure) steam exiting the steam nozzles to entrain air
Conventional technologies largely depend on cylindrical configurations
such as tubes or pipes to transport the flare gases and steam/air mixtures

Psig) can be used with the Hemisflare tip while still maintaining proper
mixing at the tip. This can be useful in some plants where medium pressure
depending on the
steam is not available or where low pressure steam is more cost efficient.
As part of its innovative design, the steam assisted Hemisflare has also
around the flare tip. The problem with cylindrical shapes is that the center
of the flare gas does not come in contact with the surrounding air, which
is needed for smokeless combustion. If, however, the flare gases could be
presented in a thin sheet, more of the gases would come in contact with
the air, increasing the likelihood of complete combustion. This is achieved
using the Coanda Effect. The Coanda Effect has been utilized in flare
technology in the past, but Honeywell UOP Callidus has improved it with
the newest version of the Hemisflare.
The new Hemisflare utilizes a patent pending Coanda bowl design to
inspirate more air. The new bowl design uses raised vertical ridges around
the outside of the bowl, significantly increasing the surface area of the
bowl. This increased surface area improves the gas/air mixing, which
improves the smokeless capacity of the flare. The bowl profile has also
been enhanced through computational fluid dynamics modeling and
physical testing, which were completed in order to optimize the bowl shape
and dimensions for the best combustion characteristics. There are two
primary components of the flare tip that are used to create the thin sheet
of gas that spreads across the bowl -- the bowl itself and the support arm.
In order to get more precise gap between the arm and the bowl,
the new Hemisflare has both of these components made of investment
