It may
be above or below the normal ground level. It is legal requirement to provide a safe working
place for every employee. When the working height is 1.5m or more above the ground level
these are required. In the NIVASIEPURA housing scheme project site for doing block work, wall
plastering, soffit plastering and sunshade construction works scaffoldings were used.
ELEMENTS OF SCAFFOLDING
Sole plate
Section of timber resisting upon a ground to provide and even distribution of loads and avoid
ground irregularities.
Base plate
A flat metal plate incorporating a central pin to which stands are located on to the sole plate.
Stands
A vertical tube member support on a base plate which rest upon a sole plates.
Ledger
A horizontal tube joining together stands and supporting putlogs and transom.
Transom
Horizontal tubes supported by ledgers and supporting scaffold boards.
Putlog
A horizontal tube with one end resisting upon a ledger and the second end flattened and located
in to the structure of the supporting building to support scaffold board.
Guard rail
Horizontal tube member on the perimeter on the scaffold to prevent material from platform.
Toe board
Horizontal boards on edge along the platform to retain loose materials or tools.
Brace
A horizontal tube fixed to other members to create stability.

TYPES OF SCAFFOLDING
Putlog scaffoldings
Independent scaffoldings
Tower scaffoldings
Bird-cage scaffoldings
Cantilevered scaffoldings
PUTLOG SCAFFOLDINGS
This is scaffolding partially supported by the building. This consists of a single raw of
stands, horizontal ledgers which inter support with the assistance of the building structure and
the horizontal putlog.
INDEPENDENT SCAFFOLDINGS
Though the name simplex an independent the building steel leads to control any
movements of the scaffold and prevent it moving away from the building. This consists of two
raw of stands. It is sometime known as masons scaffolds.
TOWER SCAFFOLDINGS
This is mainly in two types.
Static tower
Main use of this it for individual work is needed.
Mobil tower
This is similar to early one but has added advantage of mobility use by painters,
electricians and maintainers crews and any other workman who need to gain an access to
overhead area for relatively short period of time.
