Film 1

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) C

hristopher Nolan
Shot 1:

This Shot uses a mid shot to capture Gordon talking about the great Harvey did and
how he believed in him however the audience who have watched the previous films
will know what Harvey turned into (Two Face). The reason they do this is to add a
reminder for the audience and the setting gotham is currently in. The editing is a
slow pace.
Shot 2:

They use a low shot while following the car towards the location and having the
camera go through the wheat will make it feel faster while still in one shot and give of
more of a following aspect towards the scene.
Shot 3:

Next they use a Low shot to connote the power that this CIA OP has and what he
can achieve by having him stand tall in the centre gaining attention as well as being
the only one to not wear uniform. Again with slow pace editing.
Shot 4:

This reveal of bane has you on a low angle to show his power and strength as well
as only having whats at the same depth in focus will attract him into being the main
point of this shot.
Shot 5:

They use a establishing side viewed shot. To show both planes and giving the
audience an idea of what Bane's plan is and what he is going to do. The effect this
has in the angle we can see how much bigger the plane Bane has set in and the
effect this will have. As the plan begins the pace of editing significantly speeds up to
go with the action.
Shot 6:

The Idea of this low shot is to have the camera film low and have Tom Hardy (Bane)
Overwhelm the field of view and it has been noted that Tom Hardy can make a
different outlets just with his eyes as both shots compared when revel you can see
he shows calmness but in this shot you get the sense of anger and power to follow
the plan. Continuing with fast paced editing.
Shot 7:

As these opening scenes focus on Bane this is a great short show on deceiving
again his power in the film just by making it feel he is above everyone and how the
CIA team can't do anything about it and also show how Bane is in control.
Shot 8:

In this shot we see Bane telling his man to stay behind to sacrifice themselves for the
plan so they will not get caught while using a close up shot we can see the specific
detail on how they both react when this event occurs.
Shot 9:

They use a establishing shot to show of Gotham and the tall scale of each building
with the pace of editing slowed down as the action has ended.
Lighting:
Throughout the opening minutes the scene is always bright to see using basic
lighting to add more visual to bane as previous batman films have been dark and at
night time for big action scenes.
Mise en scene:
A big focus is costumes such as the CIA Ops non uniform compared to his men who
are in uniform and significantly Banes mask as that what he is also known for.
While props follow simple guns and bags to go over the heads of captured men.
The setting being in a plane while flying over what seems to be scotland.
Editing:
The Pace begins slow but as expected but once Bane is revealed the action begins
the pace of editing speeds up between different angles but returning to each one at
least once.
Camera Work:
All the Shots are perfectly still apart from the action to make a sense of realism this
is to improve the quality of the overall film and people would not want to watch it if it
is all unprofessional.

The reason I Chose this film was due to the fact it is a very fast entrance action
packed first five minutes which can show sharp fast paced editing and makes it a
enjoyable out set for the film for people who like this genre such as myself.
Good aspects of the opening of this film is its action even though this would be hard
for me to replicate it shows a broad range on what shots are possible to create a
representation of different characters.

Film 2
Rocky (1976) John G. Avildsen
Shot 1:

They first use a establishing shot to show us

they are in a small boxing ring with small
boxers where you can do small bets they do this to introduce the type of person
stallone is going to be in this film as Rocky.
Shot 2:

Next they use a low shot to show Rocky

(Stallone) Losing anger and hitting his opponent to win the match they use this low
shot to hide the fact that this is all planned with every hit to be performed as this is a
old film many of these punches were landed hurting each actor.
Shot 3:

This is a mid shot to show how people see health as smoking was not seen to hinder
you but instead safe to use even in these circumstances in sport.

Shot 4:

As we follow Rocky walking the title sequences

begin with first showing who the film is by and all the main stars such as saying
starring Sylvester Stallone as seen in this screen grab.
Shot 5:

We next see the living conditions of how

Rocky lives and what common life was for these sorts of people by using a simple
long shot we see the entire room and clearly how it was like
Shot 6:

We see a simple over the shoulder but using a

mirror to see the characters expressions on him talking into the mirror practicing a
joke that we see later on in the film.

Shot 7:

Again we see a long shot of Rocky doing a day job however they show what life is
like for a poor person as this may be seen as illegal as he does this for a private
organisation which can hint at his personality.
Lighting:
During the start of this film there is very low lighting during the boxing scene to
almost show how small it is as big boxing matches are always light up brightly.
Mise en Scene:
A big prop is the boxing gloves as this signals this is a boxing match with the shorts
that they were is also included .
Editing: During the boxing scene it is very fast paced editing to hide the acting as it is
not a real fight but after the match finishes the film becomes longer one shot slow
paced editing after
Camera Work:
In this film the use very basic zooming and shots with lots of mid and long shots
throughout the film as they focus on the narrative rather the fancy shots that's what
also makes this film really good and positive reviews.
The reason I Chose this film as it is one of my all time favorite classic films so I know
a lot about the film and the films that came out after. The aspects that worked in this
film is the simplicity on the shots and the realism of stunts as no sgi was used during
the opening so therefore I may be able to take some shot ideas from this film to use
in my own work at some points.

Film 3
Saving Private Ryan (1998) S teven Spielberg
Shot 1:

This first shot is a titled shot with the water coming in on the beach shot they use this
to show where the soldiers are heading towards and what they will first face in the
length of challenges.
Shot 2:

The next Shot we see is a high angled shot this shows us what the soldiers are in
and many people would establish this is world war two going by the uniform and
boats that they are in.
Shot 3:

Following on we see a mid shot showing a row with shaky camera they do this to
give of realism and make the audience feel as if they are there in there own boat with
the other soldiers.
Shot 4:

Next we see a close up shot of a hand which is shaking to show nerves for this
character and the current mind set he may be in during this nerve racking time as
they are fighting for their life.
Shot 5:

WE next see a close up of a main character and the nerve move as shown by the
close up of his hand as he tries to hide it in his face as they are moving forward.
Shot 6:

The next shot we see is in the view of the opposition with almost a PoV as we see
the gun being fired and fed the bullets to shoot down the previous characters we
seen.

Shot 7:

In this shot we see a tracking shot of these two character almost in a pov of
someone else as the camera is shaky making you feel as if you were there.
Lighting:
In this opening sequence the lighting is always seen as dark to reflect the amount of
lost lives that has been seen as this is based on partly a true story with Omaha
Beach being this sequence and it would not want to seen as a bright sunny day as it
was a dark time.
Mise en Scene:
Props has a huge part to play with the guns used in the shots such as basic carbine
rifles and heavy machine guns. A well as the costume for all of the soldiers with both
sides of the troops.
Editing:
There is a lot of fast paced editing during this sequence to hide the planned
explosions and shootings as well as to add intensity into the action packed opening
to the film.
Camera Work:
A lot of this is very shaky and unprofessional to add a sense of realism and to make
the audience feel that they are in the action this makes a huge improvement to the
film rather than seeing in perfectly still frames.
The reason I chose this film was due to the factual idea of world war two as it was
my favorite aspect to learn in history. The sense of having the audience engaged
with lots of pov and shaky camera shots makes a strong positive for this film and this
is simple to recreate yourself so i may be able to create a similar style myself.

During this episode of Doctor Who they follow lots of stereotypes and counter types they do
this to connote a basic story line while having all adventures brave and up for anything and
the effect these characters can have on how people may view life and seeing violence may
not be the answer. Including the pace of editing increases as the action begins to add an
effect of intensity to the shots performed.
They use many different types of camera shots throughout the episode varying from long
range to close ups and having shake sometimes to make the viewer feel involved with the
program such as being in the tardis when it forcefully takes them somewhere else were they
were not meant to go.
Mise en Scene has a big part as The Doctor has his well known costume of tien and long
coat with the included prop of a sonic screwdriver. While the the costumes of the humans
with the same uniform as well as how the Hath look and the design of their costume.
