*A Piece Of Advice To All The Freshers*

Before I start it, let me warn you this is going to be long. Also, not all the p
oints I'm going to make here are mine. While some are my own experiences, some a
re the things I learnt from others' experiences. It's a mixed copied-edited-pers
onal accounted bundle.
So, it's already been about more than a semester here in IIT BBSR. And I can sur
ely say many of you don't find this place up to your expectations. That's not th
e big deal. The very same thing happens with everyone. When I was a fresher, we
were in Kesura and even we had isolation from, say everything. No malls, no high
ways, no restaurants, no liquor shops, no cars, no bikes, nothing at all. While
this isolation can become a headache to a considerable number of people. I wish
you luck for being on the latter side.
So, here are some points I would like to convey: 1. Make friends, as many as you can. Don't just lock yourself up in the room. Yo
u don't have your parents, guardians, or family here. Your friends will be the o
nly family you will have for upcoming 4 years. There would be some people who wo
n't even know their side room-mates. No, dude, please don't do that. No matter h
ow weird they are, know them atleast. If you don't find them worthy, don't make
them a good friend, but at least know them, and talk to them at regular interval
s of time. Then know your wing-mates, then your hall-mates, and your section-mat
es. They are going to be your companions for a long time now. And dude, that fee
ling is really awesome when you're standing somewhere, and someone comes and pat
s your back saying, "Aur Bhai! Kaisa hai?" Just keep increasing your friend circ
le.
2. It may seem to you, but your laptop and phone are not your best-friends. Yes,
It can entertain you at times. It can help you talk to your friends who are sit
ting kilometers away. It can help you in your studies. It can help you to pass y
our time while you get bored and can help you getting pass in exams. It can prov
ide you porn and help you in masturbation. But it is NOT your best-friend, not e
ven a friend for that matter. Your real friends will always be the real people h
ere. So open up to them, give your time to them, rather than investing your time
in watching Movies, TV Series, Porn or IMDB Top 250.
3. I don't say to respect your seniors but atleast don't misbehave knowingly wit
h any of your junior or senior. Not because they are senior to you, but because
they've spent more time here than you, and they've more experience than you do.
I am not saying all are good but You'll get to learn something from every single
one of them. Even the ones who've thoroughly fucked up their lives in IIT BBSR
can be a very source of positive inspiration to you. So, respect them, talk to t
hem, and try to learn from their experiences. In fact, you have the advantage th
is year you're sharing hostel with 2nd/3rd/4th/M.Sc/M.Tech students unlike last
years in Kesura/Khosla/Madanpur. You can approach them, you should approach them
.
4. Having said that, do not make role models. I see many people tend to do that.
They find some stud type seniors/people, and start following their path. You ca
n walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you are good or a
total asshole so pay no attention to people. Well, there's not a harm in that, b
ut why to copy someone else's path when you can create your own? Also, it may be
possible that your interests, your smartness, your discipline, your dedication
and your seriousness towards something may completely be different from everyone
else. So, instead of getting amused by someone, and making him/her your role mo
del, you should explore your own interests, your abilities. But you can always l
earn from their experiences.

5. Know at least one professor. In fact, I say try

t every professor is like the boring professor who
re so many good ones too. Try contacting them, and
them. It's important, and it's fun actually. Plus
xperienced friend.

to be friend with him/her. No

teaches your section. There a
make a good acquaintance with
you get one real mature and e

6. Do not give up your studies. Yes, you may not like some subjects or professor
s but don't give up your hard work. You can definitely score good if you'll stud
y. You cracked JEE. But at the same time, don't be over-confident about this fac
t. Don't be over-confident and leave everything for last night studies. That's n
ot the proper way, and most of the times its consequences are not good.
7. Having fun is important and necessary. But having fun only, and doing nothing
and wasting time by roaming all day is stupidity. Study; and study nicely. Not
for the sake of CGPA, but for the sake of knowledge. No matter how much others t
ry to misguide you that studies are not important, they are fooling you. Everyon
e should have a basic knowledge of their field.
8. Do not, I repeat, do not worry about making a CV. I've seen people joining fe
sts, societies, getting internships, doing projects just for the sake of buildin
g a CV. I don't mean to say that having a good CV is not important, but doing th
ings just for the sake of CV is not the right way. Like I said before, explore t
hings. If you have an interest, go for it. If you don't have then explore, and g
et one. If you like dancing, dance. If you like singing, sing. Wanna play guitar
? Play. You're into books? Go read some. Wanna make movies? Make. Interested in
robots and electronics? Go make some bots. Wanna go to gym? Go. Interested In Sp
orts? Play. If you find nothing, even an interest in studies will do. So, have o
ne interest, and go for it. Your CV will take care of itself. Do as good as you
can in your interest, and you'll see your CV will shine.
9. DO NOT GET A "F" GRADE.
You may argue here that it's not in your hands, but I tell you it's completely i
n your hands. IF you're FAILING in any subject, it's your fault and no one else'
s. Once you FAIL in a subject, there are SUMMER QUARTERS and SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMS
. And they are pain in the ass, bro. They literally are. So, it's only been a mo
nth here, and you still have sufficient time to manage things up, in case you're
screwing.
10. Extending the last point, do not bunk Health and Fitness because nobody keep
s a person who is diseased, depressed and not in a state of good mental and phys
ical health.
11. Don't indulge in fights unless required. Neither with your batch-mates, nor
with anyone else. And especially with the security people. That may have some re
al bad consequences.
12. Have at least one friend you can share a lot of things with. We all get sent
imental and emotional at times. It's advised to let the sadness flow. Have that
one friend on whose shoulder you can cry, like literally cry.
13. This age is never gonna come back, so fall in love, if you can't have a new
crush everyday. Yes, I know and I understand what the sex ratio of IIT BBSR is b
ut instead of complaining about this all the time, while you can't change even a
bit of it, it's rather better to enjoy life and spend some time on yourself rat
her than rushing into a relationship. Fear of being single can skew your priorit
ies and even being single has its benefits, it really does.
14. And lastly, have an open, untamed and confident mind. I read somewhere that
College is the best place to make mistakes. I assure you he was right. You can m
ake mistakes here. Just go and do whatever the fuck you want to do because in th

e end, some people are assholes and will judge you anyway. You can correct your
mistakes here in college, which won't be possible once you go out and get a job
or start a business.
You'll have to leave this place someday. Now it's up to you what good use you ca
n make of it.
