Body Perception and Self-Esteem

Research Question

Review of Literature

Is the perception of ones body size a

major contributing factor in ones selfesteem in college students aged 18 to
22?

BMI and Self-esteem: Moncur et al. (2013) demonstrated

global self-esteem was significantly lower for individuals
in the highest BMI category. There is no significant
correlation between depression and obesity (Hammerton et
al., 2014). Sira and White reported an association between
higher BMIs and body satisfaction.

Null Hypothesis
The perception of ones body size is not
a major contributing factor in ones selfesteem in college students aged 18 to
22.
Population
All participants will be students from a
private, faith based university. Students
must be between the ages of 18 and 22
to qualify.

Body Perception: Drury and Lewis (2015) reported

an higher BMIs are associated with delaying and
avoiding medical care. Adolescent females have
greater body related shame than adolescent males
(Sabiston et. al., 2015), and more women perceive
themselves as overweight than men (Wardle et al.,
2006).
Factors Related to Self-esteem: Clinical depression and
self-esteem have a negative correlation, but religious
beliefs correlates positively to self-esteem (Papazisis et
al., 2014). There is no significant correlation between
self-esteem and objective physical attractivness (Diener
et al., 1995)

Methodology
The Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale will
be used to measure self-esteem. To
determine the perception of ones
body size, the Stunkard Figure Rating
Scale will be used. The students will
be notified of the survey via email.
Students will then be invited to take
the survey through a link via Survey
Monkey.
