Meet Maria Cristina Pereira Campos and Carlos Melo de Souza

Brazil is a country that is always in the news.
This is perhaps because of its vast rainforests,
its growing new industries, or even the exploits
of its footballers. It is the fifth biggest country in
the world and has the fifth largest population.

Over three quarters of Brazilians live in towns

and cities. Cristina lives in busy, prosperous
Rio de Janeiro on Brazils south east Atlantic
coast. It has a wonderful setting and a colourful
way of life. In contrast, Carlos lives in Manaus
in the heart of Brazils rainforest, hundreds
of kilometres from the ocean. It used to be
the centre of the rubber trade but it is now an
expanding city which attracts new industries.

Brazil is a young country. Nearly two thirds of its

people are under 30 years of age. Cristina and
Carlos are two nine-year-old children who live
with their families, go to school and play in two
very different parts of this enormous country.
