YouMUSTbeaqualifiedservicepersonbeforeproceedingwiththesetestinstructions.

Beforecheckingresistancereadings,turnoffpowersourcetounitandthenisolateeachitemtobechecked

fromthecircuitbyunpluggingit.

Whensettinggaspressuresononeoftheseunits,pleasecheckthecompletemodelnumberyouaretrouble

shooting.Gaspressuresanddipswitchescanvaryamongmodels.Alwayschecktheratingplateforcomplete

1.Performthistestonlyiftheunitiscodingoutduringyourservicecall.Removetheventsystemfrom
thetopofthewaterheater.Firetheproductandseeiftheunitwilloperatewithouttheventsystem
connected.Iftheunitoperateswithoutcodingoutatthatpointthat'sagreatindicationtheproblemis
intheventsystemleavingtheunit.Ensurethefrontcoverisinstalledonproductbeforeperformingthis
test.Neverleaveaunitoperatingwithouttheventsystemconnected.Thetestmentionedaboveisonly
that,atest.Iftheunitfunctionedwiththeventdisconnectedthereisa95%chancetheissueisinthe
ventpipeinstallation.Nextgotostep2below.Thereisa5%chanceitcouldbeintheotheritemslisted
below.

2.Verifyeachventsectionforproperinstallation.Thiswillrequiredisassemblingeachsectiontoensure
properinstallationdepth.Markventpipesectionwithamarkerbeforedisassembling.Thiswillallow
youtodeterminetheproperdepthwhenyoudisassemblethecomponents.Makesuretousethe
siliconegreaseRinnaisupplieswiththecondensingvent(PP)ventingwheninstallingeachjoint.Failure
tousethegreasewillresultinimproperlysealedjointswhichwillleadtocode10.

3.Inspecttheventsystemtoensureallclearancesaroundventterminationsweremet.Improper
clearanceswillresultinrecirculationofcombustiongases.

4.Makesuredipswitchforventlengthwassettotheproperposition.Firstdeterminetotalventlength,
eachninetydegreeelbowcountsassixfootofventlength,andeachfortyfivedegreebendcountsas
threefoot.Example;aventsystemwithtwoninetydegreeelbows,onefortyfivedegreeelbowandten
footofstraightpipewouldbecalculatedastwentyfivefootoftotalventlength.

5.Ifinstallersprayedaformsealantaroundtheventpipepenetrationthroughthewallmakesurethis
materialdidnotcollapsetheintakepipe.Lookdownventpipewithaflashlight.Ifyoucan'tseethat
sectionofventingmaterialremoveitfromthewallandinspectit.

6.Checkfordebrisinventsystem.Disconnectjointslookingforwater,condensation,inspectsorother
items.

7.MakesureventterminationmeetsRinnai'srecommendationfromanotherventterminationonthe
samewall.IfmultipleRinnai'sareinstalledatlocationeachterminationshouldhaveaminimumof
twelveinchesofseparationwheninstalledonthesameplane.Iftheotherventsarenotonthesame
planeyouneedafivefootseparationbetweenventterminations.

8.Verifyventterminalsareinstalledwiththeproperclearancefromoverhangs,grade,obstructions,
walls,porches,etc.Seeventinginstructionsforproperclearancerequirements.

9.Removefanmotorandinspectfanwheel,housing,andairductforanytyperestriction.

10.Removeburnermanifoldandinspectforinsectsorotherdebrisinairchannelforrestriction.

11.Removeburnerandinspectcopperfinsinheatexchangerforabuildupbetweenfins.Thiswillcause
airflowrestrictionswhichcanleadtocode10's.Ifbuildupispresent,youwillneedanaircompressor
capableofdelivering120psiofairtoblowouttheburnerandheatexchangerfins.Ifunabletocleanthe
heatexchangerwithcompressedairreplacetheheatexchanger.Alwayswearsafetyglassesandamask
whenblowingouttheburner.

12.Verifylowandhighfiremanifoldpressuresaresetcorrectly.Somemodelunitshaveaburnersensor
ifthemanifoldpressuresarenotproperlysetthetemperaturerangeforthissenormaybetoolow
causingacode10.Thisinformationcanbefoundunderthefrontcoverintheplasticholder.Ifmissing
contactRinnaiforpropergaspressuresettingprocedures.

13.Verifymanifoldgaspressuresanddipswitcheswereproperlysetforyouraltitude.Thisinformation
canbefoundunderthefrontcoverintheplasticholder.IfmissingcontactRinnaiforpropergas
pressuresettingprocedures.

NoIgnition

Requestpicturesofthegaspiping,meter,regulator,tankandanyflexconnectorsusedinthesystem.In
addition;havetheinstallerremovethefrontcoverandforwardyoupicturesoftheheatexchanger,fan
motor,andtheareaaroundtheflamerod.Reviewthesepictureslookingforimpropersizedgaslines,
regulators,tanks,signsofwaterleaksorheatdamagetocomponentsinsidetheunitscasing.Fileall
picturesinSytelineunderincidentnumber.

1.Verifyallgasvalvesongassystemareopenfeedingthepropergaspressuretosaidappliance.

2.Verifyallairwaspurgedfromgaslinesafterinstallation.

3.Verifyproperinletgaspressuresarebeingfedtoappliance.Checkappliancesratingplateforproper
pressures.Thisplateorlabelislocatedonthesideofeachunit.TheminimumlistedinletpressureMUST
bemaintainedwithallgasappliancesatthelocationfiringonhighfire.Iftheproductisacondensing
unitthefrontpanelmustbeinstalledbeforetestinginletpressures.

4.Verifypropergastype;ensurethegassupplyatthislocationmatchesthatlistedonsaidappliance.

5.VerifygastypedipswitchonPCboardisswitchtopropergastypeposition.

6.Verifyigniterisworking.Turnoffgasvalvefeedingtheappliance.Unplugigniterwire;holdtheigniter
wirewithaninsulatedpairofpliersabouta1/4"fromapieceofmetal.Cycletheunittoensureyousee
asparkwhenunitiscycling.Ifnot,checkignitionsystemforlooseconnections,damagedcomponentsor
disconnectedplugsbacktoPCboard..Ifnosparkisnotedchecktheignitionboardtoverifyitisgetting
thepropervoltagefromthePCboard.Seetroubleshootingdocumentundertheunit'sfrontcoverfor
propervoltageandconnectornumbers.Note;therewillbenovoltagepresentunlesstheunitisgoing
throughtheignitioncycle.

7.Makesuretheceramicsparkerelectrodeistightinitsmountingbracket.Youshouldnotbeableto
moveitwithyourfingerifgasketisintact.Iflooseremoveitandcleanwithdollarbill.Reinstallusing
newgasketandensureitistightwhentheinstallationisfinished.Iftheelectrodeisloosethetipcan
dropdownandtouchtheburnerscreatingashortornospark.Alooseflamerodiscalledafloating
flamerodandwillresultincode11sor12's.

8.Verifytheproperflamerodwireispluggedintotheproperflamerod.Someunitshavemultipleflame
rods.Aquickchecktoverifycorrectwiringistolookatthestampedletteronthebracketatflamerod,
sampleaYindicatesyellow,R=redandB=blue

9.Verifytheflamerodistightinitsmountingbracket.Youshouldnotbeabletomoveitwithyour
fingerifgasketisintact.Iflooseremoveitandcleanwithdollarbill.Inspectflamerodforcracks.
Reinstallusingnewgasketandensureitistightwheninstallationisfinished.Alooseflamerodiscalleda
floatingflamerodandwillresultincode11's.

10.Lookintoviewwindowonappliancetoseeifyoueverseeaflameintheburnerboxwhiletheunitis
goingthroughtheignitioncycle.Ifyoudothatindicatesanissueintheflamerectificationcircuit.This
couldbeabuildupofcarbonorawhitesubstanceonflamerod,badconnectionatflamerod,looseor
damagedflamerod,badPCboard,gasvalveorlowinletgaspressures.BeforereplacingthePCboardor
gasvalvecontinuetroubleshootingthestepsbelow.

11.Removeigniterandflamerodandinspectthemforcarbonorawhitesubstancebuildup.Cleanboth
theigniterandflamerodbeforereinstalling.Inadditioninspecttheburnersundertheigniterfor
condensatebuildupordebris.Blowoutburnersandburnerboxwith120psiofair.Ifyouremovejust
theigniterandflamerodassemblies,makesureyouhaveanewflamerod/ignitergasket.Thisgasket
MUSTbereplacedifthissealisbroken.Whileinsidetheburnerboxlookupbetweenthecopperfins
insidetheheatexchangerfordebrisand/orblockage.Blowoutfins,ifunabletocleanoutfinsinside
combustionboxreplaceheatexchanger.

12.Ifyounoteimproperinletgaspressureschecktoseeifthegassystemwasproperlysized.Ifsized
properlyyoushouldseenomorethana0.3inchpressuredroponnaturalgaswithallgasappliancesin
thebuildingfiringonhighfire.Theallowablepressuredropforpropaneis0.5inchesofwatercolumn.
ThispressuredropisbasedontheInternationalPlumbingCodewhenoperatingongaspressuresupto
14"inchesW.C.withblackironpiping.Thereareanumberofapprovedgaspipingsystemoutthere,
makesureyourefertothemanufacture'sorInternationalPlumbingCodebookforpressuredropson
gaspipingandpressuresyouareusingforproperpressuredropsallowed.Ifpressuredropexcessesthat
mentionedaboveforblackirongassystems,yoursystemcouldbeundersized,pleaserechecksizing.
Theissuecouldbeinanyofthefollowingitems;thegassystem,gaspiping,regulator,tank,utility
supply,dirtordebrisingassystemcomponents,etc.Havethegassystemcheckedbyaprofessionalgas
technicalormasterplumberthatdealswithgassystemsizing.RefertotheInternationalPlumbingCode
Bookforpropergassystemsizingforgastype,pipingandpressuresbeingusedatthislocation.

13.Inspectventsystemforloosejoints,improperfittings,failuretomeetclearancesaroundvent
terminaloutsidebuilding.Seeventinginstructionsforclearancespecifications.Failuretomeetvent
terminalclearancescanleadtorecirculationofcombustiongasescausingincompletecombustionwhich
willleadtocarbonbuilduponflamerod.Inaddition;ensureventlengthiswithinspecificationsanddip
switchforventlengthshasbeenproperlyset.

14.Verifyinstallerusedtheproperventingmaterialsfortheunitatyourlocation.Theymustusethe
correctventingmaterialforclassIIIappliancesapprovedbyRinnai.SeeRinnaiventinginstructionsfor
details.

15.Verifyproperaltitudesettings,seehighaltitudegaspressuresettingprocedurefordipswitchand
manifoldgaspressuresettings.

16.Oninternalunitsinspecttheplastictuberunningfromthebottomofthecombustionchamberto
thegasvalve.Ifyoufindmoistureinthattube,replacethegasvalve.Alsoinspecttheventsystemtosee
wherethecondensate/moistureiscomingfrom.Theburnerandheatexchangerfinsshouldbe
inspectedforexcessivecorrosionalso.Signsofmoisturecouldbearesultofanimproperventingora
leakinsidetheheatexchange.

17.VerifyinstallerusedthecondensatedraintapasrecommendedbyRinnaiontheventterminal
connectionatthetopofthewaterheater,noncondensingproduct.Ifthecondensatedrainlineisnot

connectedpleaseinstalloneperRinnaiventinginstructions.Ifacondensatelineisinuse,inspectthe
ventconnectorontopofwaterheatertoensureitsnotstoppedup.Inaddition;checkthecondensate
draintrapandlineforblockage.Ifstoppedupremoveventpipefromunitandcleanoutalldebris
and/orbuildupfromthetraporline.

18.Checktoensurealltwostagesregulatorsareinstalledatleastsixfootawayfromappliance.Ensure
whenapplianceshutsoffthepressurefromthetwostageregulatordoesn'texceedthemaximuminlet
pressurefortheappliance.Toverifythisconnectyourmanometeruptothetestportonthebottomof
thewaterheater.Theinletpressuresshouldneverexceed10incheswatercolumnfornaturalgasor
13.5inchesonpropane.Ifitdoestheregulatormaybedefective.

19.Inspectallwiringharnessesthroughoutunitforwaterormoistureinelectricalconnections.Ifany
connectionsappeartobedamporwetdrythemoutandtrytofindoutwhatiscausingthis.

20.IfusinganMSAorMSBsystemisolatetheunitgivingtroublefromthesystemduring
troubleshooting.Ifunitoperateswhenisolatedtheissuemaybeintheelectronicstagingsystem(MSA
orMSB).

21.Othersuggestions;

a. Verifysparkelectrodeisinstalledinthecorrectposition.

b. Verifyallburnercassettesareinplaceinburnerrack.Sometimeswhencontractorsdropaunitthe
burnerscanshiftandbecomedislodged.Ifyoufindtheburnersdislodgedlooseburnerbracketand
reseatthem.

c. Removethefourburnerslocatedundertheflamerodandmovethemovertothehighfiresideof
theburnertray.Movethefourburnersfromthehighfiresideoverundertheflamerod.Sometimes
condensateordebriscangetdownintheburnersandcauseturbulenceinsidetheburner.

d. Condensate,debrisoramalfunctioningmechanicalcomponentinsidethegasvalvemaybe
preventingthevalvefromopeningcorrectlyonceinawhile.Replacegasvalve.

e. VoltageoutputtogasvalvefromPCboardcouldbeincorrectorintermittentduetoabad
componentonPCboard,replacePCboard.

Code12TroubleshootingProcedure
FlameFailure

Requestpicturesofthegaspiping,meter,regulator,tankandanyflexconnectorsusedinthesystem.In
addition;havetheinstallerremovethefrontcoverandforwardyoupicturesoftheheatexchanger,fan
motor,andtheareaaroundtheflamerod.Reviewthesepictureslookingforimpropersizedgaslines,
regulators,tanks,signsofwaterleaksorheatdamageofcomponentsinsidetheunitscasing.Fileall
picturesinSytelineunderincidentnumber.

NOTE;beforetroubleshootingyourcode12firstdeterminewhattypecode12ispresent.Lookintothe
viewwindowwhiletheapplianceisgoingthroughtheignitioncycletoseeifyoueverseeavisibleflame.
Thereasonforthisis;therearetwotypesofcode12's.Themostcommoncode12iscalledaflame
failure,meaningtheappliancedidsenseaflameatonepoint.Inotherwordsyoucouldseeavisible
flameintheburnerboxduringtheignitioncycleand/orduringoperation.Theotheriscalledan
immediatecode12and/ornoflamewasevernotedintheburnerbox.Ifyounoteaflameevenfora
fewsecondsfollowsteps117below.Ifnoflamewasevernotedproceedtothelastitemlistedin
theseinstructionscalled,"Immediatecode12ornoflamevisibleinburnerbox".

Oftenitisdifficulttodistinguishbetweenagascode12orandelectricalcode12.Theeasiestwaytodo
thisistoturnoffthegasandthentryfiringtheunit.Itshouldgotoacode11atthatpoint.Ifitgoes
ontocode12youhaveanelectricalshortinacomponentorwiringharness.

1.Verifyproperinletgaspressuresarebeingfedtoappliance.Checkapplianceratingplateforproper
pressures.Thisplateorlabelislocatedonthesideofeachunit.TheminimumlistedinletpressureMUST
bemaintainedwithallgasappliancesatthelocationfiringonhighfire.

2.Ifyounoteimproperinletgaspressureschecktoseeifthegassystemwasproperlysized.Ifsized
properlyyoushouldseenomorethana0.3inchpressuredroponnaturalgaswithallgasappliancesin
thebuildingfiringonhighfire.Theallowablepressuredropforpropaneis0.5inchesofwatercolumn.
ThispressuredropisbasedontheInternationalPlumbingCodewhenoperatingongaspressuresupto
14"inchesW.C.withblackironpiping.Thereareanumberofapprovedgaspipingsystemoutthere,
makesureyourefertothemanufacture'sorInternationalPlumbingCodebookforpressuredropson
gaspipingandpressuresyouareusingforproperpressuredropsallowed.Ifpressuredropexcessesthat
mentionedaboveforblackirongassystems,yoursystemcouldbeundersized,pleaserechecksizing.
Theissuecouldbeinanyofthefollowingitems;thegassystem,gaspiping,regulator,tank,utility
supply,dirtordebrisingassystemcomponents,etc.Havethegassystemcheckedbyaprofessionalgas
technicalormasterplumberthatdealswithgassystemsizing.RefertotheInternationalPlumbingCode
Bookforpropergassystemsizingforgastype,pipingandpressuresbeingusedatthislocation.

3.Verifymanifoldgaspressures.Youwillneedthegaspressuresettingprocedureforthemodelnumber
applianceyouareworkingon.Thisinformationisnormallyfoundinaplasticholderonthebacksideof
thefrontpanel.IfprocedureisnotavailablecontactRinnaitechservicesfordata.Verifycorrectdip
switchsettingsbeforeadjusting/checkinggaspressures.Dipswitchsettingscanbefoundinthegas
pressuresettingprocedure.Ifinaltitudesabovetwothousandfootinelevationrefertohighaltitude
settingsandpressures.Next;connectyourmanometertothegasvalvetestport.Firetheunitup

ensuringyouhaveatleastthreegpm'sofflowthroughthewaterheater.Youcanusetheunit'skeypad
tocheckyourflowratetoverifythreeplusgpm's.Then;placetheunitintoforcedlowfireandfollow
thegaspressuresettingproceduretoadjustthelowfiregaspressure.Nextplacetheunitintoforced
highfirepergaspressuresettingprocedure.Adjusthighfirepressureperinstructions.Improper
manifoldgaspressurescanleadtocode12's.

4.Inspectventsystemforloosejoints,improperfittings,failuretomeetproperclearancesaroundvent
terminaloutsidebuilding.Seeventinginstructionsforclearancespecifications.Failuretomeetvent
terminalclearancescanleadtorecirculationofcombustiongasescausingincompletecombustionwhich
willleadtocode12.Inaddition;ensureventlengthiswithinspecificationsanddipswitchforvent
lengthshasbeenproperlyset.

5.Ensuretheinstallerusedtheproperventingmaterialsfortheunitatyourlocation.Youmustuse
concentricventingmaterialforclassIIIappliancesapprovedbyRinnai.SeeRinnaiventinginstructions
fordetails.Verifyventingcomponentatunit'sventconnectionisfullyengagedintotopofwaterheater.
Separateconnectiontocheckforproperconnection.Youcanmarkthewhiteventmaterialatthe
stainlesssteelconnectionbeforepullingitaparttocheckdepthonceseparated.Failuretohavethis
jointfullyengagedwillresultsincode12'swithintensecondsoftheunitfiring.

6.Makesuretheflamerodistightinitsmountingbracket.Youshouldnotbeabletomoveitwithyour
fingerifthegasketisintact.Ifyouremovetheflameroditisveryimportanttonotetheorientation
beforeremoval.Afterremovingit,cleanitwithadollarbill.Reinstalltheflamerodinthesame
orientationasitwasbeforeremoval.YouMUSTreplacetheflamerod/ignitergasketbeforereassembly.
Note;alooseflamerodiscalledafloatingflamerodandwillresultincode12's.Flamerodsshould
neverhavetobereplacedunlessthewhiteceramiciscrackedorbrokenortheflamerodisdamaged.

8.InspectflamerodwireslookingforlooseordamagedwiresorconnectorsattheflamerodandPC
board.

9.Inspectflamerodsiliconeprotectivesleeveforcracksorheatdamage.Ifcrackedorhasheatdamage
thesparkcouldpossiblyseekagroundingsourceotherthantheintendedtargetthoughtheigniter,
replacethesleeve.

10.Aproperlygroundedcircuitiscritical.Checktoensureallgroundconnectionsareintact,freeof
corrosion,tightateachjointorconnectionandthepolarityofthecircuitiscorrect.Ifunsurecontacta
LicensedElectriciantoinspectand/orcorrectanyissuewiththecircuit.

11.Pulltheunit'sburnerandinspectfordebrisand/orcondensatearoundtheburnerlocatedatflame
rodposition.Cleanallburnersusing120psiofcompressedair.Blowoutcombustionchamberand
copperfinsinheatchangerwhileinsidetheburnerbox.Ifyouareunabletocleanoutthedebris
betweenthecopperfinsintheheatexchanger,replaceheatexchanger.Notethecoppersurfacewhere
theburnerboxandheatexchangermeet.Ifthatsurfaceappearsblackfromheatstressthatsagood
indicationthefinsinsidetheheatexchangerarecloggedwithdebris.Ifyouhaveheatdamageonthe
surfaceoftheheatexchanger,replacetheheatexchanger.

12.Oninternalunitsinspecttheplastictuberunningfromthebottomofthecombustionchamberto
thegasvalve.Ifyoufindmoistureinthattubereplacegasvalve.Alsoinspecttheventsystemtosee

wherethecondensateiscomingfrom.Itcouldbeaventingissueorleakinsidetheheatexchange
combustionboxarea.

13.EnsureinstallerusedthecondensatedraintapasrecommendedbyRinnaiontheventterminal
connectionatthetopofthewaterheater,noncondensingproduct.Ifthecondensatedrainlineisnot
connectedpleaseinstalloneperRinnaiventinginstructions.Ifacondensatelineisinuse,inspectthe
ventconnectorontopofwaterheatertoensureitsnotstoppedup.Ifstoppedupremoveventpipe
fromunitandcleanoutalldebrisorbuildupinthetrapordrainlines.

14.Inspectfanblowerwheelfordebrisand/orinsects.Important;turnoffpowertounitbefore
unpluggingfanmotororpluggingitbackup.Failuretodosocanshortoutfanmotor.Ifinsectsordebris
arefoundinthefanhousingorburnerassembly,inspecttheentireintakeairchambertoincludethe
ventsystemandairboxchamber.

15.Checktoensurealltwostagesregulatorsareinstalledatleastsixfootawayfromappliance.Ensure
whenapplianceshutsoffthepressurefromthetwostageregulatordoesn'texceedthemaximuminlet
pressurefortheappliance.Tocheckthis,connectyourmanometeruptothetestportonthebottomof
thewaterheater.Theinletpressuresshouldneverexceed10incheswatercolumnfornaturalgasor
13.5inchesonpropane.Ifitdoestheregulatormaybedefective.

16.Inspectallwiringharnessesthroughoutunitforwaterormoistureinelectricalconnections.Ifany
connectionsappeartobedamporwetdrythemoutandtrytofindoutwhatiscausingthis.Thiscan
causeashortcircuitwhichwillleadtocode12.

17.IfanyMSAorMSBsystemisinuseisolatetheunitfromthatsystemandseeifitoperateswithout
goingtoacode12.Ashortcircuitwithinthosesystemscancauseacode12.

18.Seebelowforothersuggestions:

a.Removethefourburnerslocatedundertheflamerodandmovethemovertothehighfiresideofthe

ColdWaterSandwichcausedbyfaultyfixture:
1. Havecustomerexplainproblem.

2. TurnoffhotwaterballvalveontheRinnaivalvekitatthewaterheater.Thisshouldshutoffthe
waterflowtoallhotwaterfixturesatthelocation.Turnonahotwaterfixturetocheckandsee
ifanywatercontinuestoflowatthatfixture.Afterroughlytwominutesallresidualwaterinthe
systemshouldbleeddowntonoflowatyourfixtures.Ifwatercontinuestoflowatanyflowrate
youhaveafaultyfixture,checkvalve,oracrossoverintheplumbingsystem.Plumberor
contractormustlocatefaultyfixtureandcorrectbleedover.

3. Askthecustomerifthelocationhasacirculatingsystem.Ifso;isolatetocirculationloopfrom
theplumbingsystembymeansofashutoffvalveinthereturnloop.Wearetryingtoensure
waterisnotbypassingthewaterheaterthroughafaultycheckvalveinthereturnloop.After
shuttingofftheballvalveinthecirculatingloop,allwaterflowshouldstop.Ifnot,youmaystill
haveafaultyfixture.

4. Proceedtoallfixtureswithsinglehandlelevers,shutoffthecoldwaterballvalveateachfixture
oneatatime.Checkflowaftershuttingoffthecoldwaterlineateachfixture.Ifwaterflow
stopsduringthisprocess,gobacktothelastfixtureturnedoffandopenthecoldwaterball
valve.Ifflowstartsbackthatfixturehasabaddiaphragminit.Youcaneitherreplacethefaulty
fixtureinsertorinstallacheckvalveinthehotwaterfeedtopreventcoldwaterfromback
feeding.Notifyplumberorcontractoroffaultyfixture.

5. Iflocationhasamixingvalveisolatemixingvalve,turnoffthecoldwaterfeedtothatdevice.If
thewatertemperaturereachestemperatureandcontinuestomaintaintemperaturewiththe
mixingvalveisolated,theproblemisinthemixingvalve.

ColdWaterSandwichcausedbyLowFlow:
1. Openfixtureandrecordflowrateusingthewaterheaterstemperaturecontrolpad.

2. Shutoffhot/coldwaterfeedlinestothewaterheater,removeinletwaterfilterandcheckfor
debris,cleanifnecessary.Reinstallfilter,turnonwatersupply.Openthesametapagainand
recheckyourflowratetoseeifitincreased.Ifflowrateislessthanonegpmremovethe
restrictorandcleanthestrainerinthatfixture.Youshouldhaveatleastonegpmofflowatall
fixtures.Otherwise;pressuredropsintheplumbingsystemduetoimproperlysizedplumbing
cancausetheflowratetodropbelowtheminimumflowraterequirementoftheunit.Thiswill
causetheunittocycleon/offcausingacoldwatersandwich.

3. Coldwatersandwichescanbecreatedbynumerousitemssuchas;
a. Improperlyinstalled,faulty,orflappingcheckvalves.Swingcheckvalesshouldbe
installedwiththehexcaphorizontal,facingupwards.
b. DebrisinthefanmotorblowerwheelcausingtheunittorampupanddowninBtus
duetocycling.
c. Cloggedinletwaterfiltercausingrestrictedwaterflow.Alwayscleanfilteronallservice
calls.
d. Inletgaspressurechangingduetoundersizedmeters,regulators,gaslinesorsystems,
tanks,etc.Mustensuregassystemissizedproperly.Checkinletgaspressurewhilethe
unitisoperatinglookingforinletgaspressuressurgingupanddown.Thiswould
indicateanissuewiththegassupply.
e. Inletwaterpressurefluctuatingcausingtheunittocyclingon/offonlowflows.Canbe
causedbyfluctuatingwatersuppliesduetoimproperlysizedplumbingsystems,well
systemproblems,andutilitywatersystemsfluctuating.
f. MSAsystemcyclingespeciallyifunit#1hasacloggedfilterorrestrictedflowfor
whateverreason.Ifunit#1iscreatingtheissue,mayhavetoinstallaPVAvalveto
resolve.
g. Faultyvalvediaphragmcancauseafixturetobleedover.Couldbeafixtureupordown
streamfromareaexperiencingsandwich.
h. Standarduseofwaterinaplumbingsystemwithoutcirculationwhencustomerturns
hotwateroffandsomeoneelsecomesupbehindthemwithafewminutesanduseshot
water.Waterinplumbingsystemcanstillbehot,butwhenthelastpersonusinghot
waterturnedoffthefixturethewaterheatercycledoff.Whenthenextpersonopened
thetap,thewaterheaterhadtorefire,allowingsomecoldwaterbackintothesystem.
i. Demandsystemseachtimeademandsystemcallsforhotwaterthewaterheater
cycleson.Iftheconsumerdoesnotleavethetapopenthewaterheatercyclesoff.Then

whenthewateristurnedbackonwithinafewminutesofthedemandsystemcycling,
andcoldwatersandwichiscreated.
j. Looseorbadelectricalconnectioninsidethewaterheaterorpowersupplytoproduct.
Powersupplycouldbedroppingoutmomentarilyduetoacomponentheatingup,loose
wiringconnections,etc.
k. Lowflowshowerheadsespeciallyinareawithhighgroundwatertemperatures.
