Course Description:
This course focuses on the basic concepts and ideas of information systems, applications and impact
of information systems, understanding the role of information technology, building and managing of
information systems, the strategic use of information systems in the organizations, and the web
revolution.

Course Objectives:
- To be familiar with the importance of information systems (IS) for business and management,
definition of information systems, the role of information systems in today's business environment.
- To be aware of the perspectives on information systems, dimensions of information systems, and
the contemporary approaches to information systems.
- To define the major type of information systems, describe the how information systems support the
major business functions.
- To analyze the relationship between organization, information systems, and business processes and
to explain how enterprise applications promote business integration and enhance organizational
performance.

- To show how information systems can be used strategically to enable firms to gain competitive
advantage by explaining how information systems support various business strategies for
competitive advantage.
- To understand ethical and social issues related to information systems and the main moral issue of
an information society and principle to guide ethical decisions
- To understand the technical foundation of information systems by investigating technical
managerial dimensions of information technology infrastructure.

- To describe the contemporary hardware and software platforms along with technologies for data
communication and management, and the internet wireless networking technologies.
- To describe the role of information systems in enhancing business process and decision making
across the enterprise
- To understand the major enterprise applications for digital integration: enterprise systems, systems
for supply chain management, customer relationship management, and knowledge management
- to describe business intelligence, decision support systems, and executives support systems firm
performance and business value.
- To understand how the companies can use information systems to redesign their business
processes, understanding the business value of systems and managing change,
- To identify alternative systems -building approaches and applications development for the digital
firms.
- To show how internet is creating a universal platform for buying and selling goods, and to define
electronic business and electronic commerce and how firms can be benefit from them.

Research Paper (20%):


A research paper will be required for this course. The research should be a narrowly focused in depth
examination of an IS subject (see the suggested list of the research topics). A short presentation of
the research paper is required. The research paper is worth 20 marks. The paper can be done
individually or in groups (1-3 members).

Attendance:
Attendance is mandatory. It is the policy of the University that absence for more than 6 scheduled
classes will result in a failing grade. Students being ready for the class start at 3:00 will be highly
respected. Missing class will reduce your participation mark and the overall score. Students should be
prepared to discuss the reading material, articles, assigned cases and discussion or review questions.
Failure to prepare and participate will also reduce this portion of your grade.
