Subject: Mathematics

Common Core Standard(s):

K.CC.B.4
Count to tell the number of objects.
K.MD.B.3
Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category

Objective(s): At the end of this lesson my students will be able to count and classify groups
with totals of 1-5

Resources/Materials List:
Cow, Pig, Duck, Horse, and Sheep counters
White Boards and Markers
Procedure:
Focus: The focus of this lesson is working with numbers 1-5
Review: To begin the lesson we will go over counting to five by using our bodies. Jump one time
(I will write the number 1), Clap two times (I will write the number two), Stomp three times (I will
write the number 3), Flap your arms four times (I will write the number 4), Turn around in a circle
five times (I will write the number five). We will then look at the numbers together and count out
loud 1-2-3-4-5.
Modeling: I will have animal counters and start with a group of three. I will count out loud 1-2-3,
then ask students how many animals that I have? I will repeat this with the number two.
Guided Practice: I will have students work in small groups to make numbers 1-5. We will do this
by having one student pick the number, having another count out the number of animals and
then a third writing the number down. I will have students do this and shift jobs until everyone
has had a few turns.
Independent Practice: Students will go to their seats with animal counters. They will be given a
worksheet showing groups of 1,2,3,4, and 5. The students will be asked to count and label the
number of animals in each group.
Plans for differentiation: For students struggling to grasp the concept of 5 we will work with
numbers 1-3. For students who are excelling we will work with numbers 6-10 doing the same

activities. I have given the opportunity for all to use counters during independent practice so that
they have the opportunity for hands on, tactile engagement if needed.
Plans for accommodation/modification: At this time I am not sure if I would have any
identified students. If I did I would make sure to accommodate to meet their individual needs
and IEP goals.
Assessment: I will know students have obtained this goal when they can show through
independent practice which groups of objects represent 1-5.

Whats next? Next, students will work on addition and the ways to make 5. This follows the
kindergarten standard K.OA.A.5 Fluently add and subtract within 5.
Reflection: At this time I do not have a reflection because the lesson has not yet been put into
place.
