What is the relationship between craters, calderas,

vents, and magma? Craters, or calderas which are
basically larger craters, surround vents from which
magma comes out of.
How does a crater lake form? (words and pictures)
The summit or the side of the volcano collapses into
the magma chamber which once fueled the volcano.

What two factors does a volcanos appearance

depend upon? The type of material that forms the
volcano and the type of eruptions that occur.

What characteristics vary among volcanoes? Size,

Shape, and Composition

How do the volcanoes compare in terms of size and

slope? Shield are the largest but have the gentlest
slopes; Cinder-cone are the smallest but have the
steepest slope.
What factors cause differences in size and slope?
Materials that make up the volcanoes, the
vegetation, the climate, and its eruptive history.
What is tephra? Rock fragments thrown into the air
during a volcanic eruption.
What is a pyroclastic flow? Clouds of gas, ash, and
other tephra that go down a slope at incredible
speeds.
Where are most volcanoes found? Convergent
boundaries

Use the maps provided to show: (1) the Circum Pacific

Belt and the Mediterranean Belt where convergent
volcanism occur and (2) the Hawaiian Emperor Volcanic
Chain.
How do hotspots form? The intense heat of
plumes melt rock and is then forced upward
toward the crust as magma.
What do hotspots tell us about tectonic plates?
Volcanoes can be formed when plates move over a
hot spot.
