FOUR TYPES OF ASSESMENTS

Norm-referenced assessments: Refers to standardized tests on which a pupils


performance is compared to that of his or her peers. Provides a great deal of statistical

information.
Criterion-referenced assessments: An assessment procedure in which a students
performance is compared to a particular level of mastery. Offers a mean of educational

accountability.
Curriculum-based assessment: Test items are based on objectives found in the local

school curriculum. Goals are easily recognizable.


Authentic assessment (Portfolio): Paints a more accurate or genuine picture of what a
pupil can and cannot accomplish in real life situations such as in the classroom or home.
Good for parent teacher conferences.
