Who is Alan Turing??


Mathematician
Cryptographer
Pioneer of computer science
His work forms the basis of todays programmable
computers.
The creator of the Bombe machine that helped wins
WWII.

In 1926
Sherborne school
Met Christopher Morcom, his first love
and inspirations.

In 1930
Christopher Morcom died.
He coped with his grief by working harder on the
topics of Science and Mathematics that he had shared
with Morcom.

In 1936
The Turing machine, a theoretical computing device,
was invented.
Turing studied mathematics and cryptology at the
Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New
Jersey.

During World War II


He was in charge of Hut 8, a section at
Bletchley Park (British WW II code breaking
station) tasked with solving encoded
German naval messages.

In 1939
The Bombe Machine, which is the machine that
helped decipher the Nazi Enigma code, was
designed.

Homosexuality and Conviction

He was convicted of Gross Indecency after the police


learned of his sexual relationship with a young
Manchester man.

Rather than go to prison he accepted, for the period of


a year, injections of estrogen intended to neutralise his
libido. The treatment left him chemically castrated.
(*Gross indecency is a British and Canadian legal term which was used to
criminalise sexual activity between men, short of anal penetration.)

Death
7th of June, 1954
He committed suicide, the cause of death
was cyanide poisoning.
In 2013, 59 years after his death, he was given
a posthumous royal pardon.
