Classroom policies and expectations

Materials:
1-inch, 3-ring binder with Clear Cover to insert paper (for Science use only)
4 divider tabs for Research, Assessments, Writing Guides and STEM
Pacing: There are 17 standards we will focus on in 7 th grade science; they are listed on the
back of this page. We will study approximately 8-9 standards each semester. Our units of
study include: waves and energy, living things, chemistry, weather, and environmental
science.
Classwork: Students are introduced to each standard with a Case Study page that
includes the Guiding Question and the Performance Expectations to prepare for every
assessment.
Students keep the Case Study and all research notes in their 1-inch Science Binder.
Students are guided in the research process and have ample time to complete all research
in class; however, if they need more time, they may have the opportunity to continue the
research at home. The research notes are stored in their Science Binder and must be used
on each assessment.
Standard Based Grades: There is one score per standard entered into HAC. This score is
based on their performance on the assessment piece. Students keep each assessment in
their Science Binder after it has been scored. Other research materials are removed once
the unit of study is complete.
2nd Look: If research notes are incomplete, or poorly done, then the quality of work on the
assessment may be affected. If the score on any assessment is not satisfactory to you or
your student, the assessments are eligible for a student to re-do on their own.
The 2nd Look must be attached to the original assessment so that I can see what changes
have been made. The 2nd Look must be turned back in within a reasonable time.
Tutoring: Lunchtime Workshops will be scheduled for students who would like additional
support on the research or for the 2nd Look on the most recent assessments.

Standards for Assessment

1. I can use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how
the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave.
MS-PS4-1
2. I can develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted
through various materials.
MS-PS4-2
3. I can conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one
cell or many different numbers and types of cells.
MS-LS1-1
4. I can develop and use a model to explain the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells
contribute to the function.
MS-LS1-2
5. I can use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems
composed of groups of cells.
MS-LS1-3
6. I can develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with
identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation.
MS-LS3-2

7. I can construct an explanation based on evidence that describes how genetic variations of traits
in a population increase some individuals probability of surviving and reproducing in a specific
environment.
MS-LS4-4
8. I can use argument based on empirical evidence and scientific reasoning to support how
characteristic animal behaviors and specialized plant structures affect the probability of successful
reproduction of animals and plants respectively.
MS-LS1-4
9. I can construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the
cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms.
MS-LS1-6
10. I can develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended
structures.
MS-PS1-1
11. I can develop a model to describe how food is rearranged through chemical reactions forming new
molecules that support growth and/or release energy as this matter moves through an organism.
MS-LS1-7

12. I can develop and use a model to describe how the total number of atoms does not change in a
chemical reactions and thus mass is conserved.
MS-PS1-5
13. I can analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances
interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.
MS-PS1-2
14. I can develop a model to describe the cycling of water through Earths systems driven by energy
from the sun and the force of gravity.
MS-ESS2-4
15. I can collect data to provide evidence for how the motions and complex interactions of air masses
results in changes in weather conditions.
MS-ESS2-5
16. I can construct an argument supported by evidence for how increases in human population and
per-capita consumption of natural resources impact Earths systems.
MS-ESS3-4
17. I can apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing human impact on
the environment.
