Why are dictionaries so important when studying English?

Even though learning process has change dramatically in the last years, using a dictionary
is important for students. Its use develops learners autonomy leading to hours of selfguided study. Besides, they are useful for many reasons.
One of them will be pronunciation, through the aid of a dictionary you can check out a
words right utterance. For example, the pronunciation of the word cup is /kp/.
Another advantage of the dictionary is that informs you which part of speech a certain
word belongs. If is a verb, a noun, and adjective, etc.
Sometimes to understand the meaning of the word you need more than just the definition.
An example sentence dictionary helps you a lot, seeing the word in a sentence can
provide more context and relevance.
On the other hand, the use of dictionaries has some disadvantages. Not all of them have
the same definition or the same words, it may be confusing for several people. If you are
looking for an unknown word you need to know its spelling, otherwise will be impossible to
find it.
To sum up, a dictionary is great help for everyone, especially for students who are keen on
learning a language. So, next time you go to classes make sure to bring one with you!
