Hannah crosses across stage in front of Brandon,

who is sitting on a park bench, alone. He had been
half-listening in on their conversation, as they
had been the only three left in the park. Thinking
Brandon is homeless, Hannah pulls out a dollar
bill to hand to Brandon. She holds it out to
Hannah. He stares at it.

HANNAH
You can have it.
BRANDON
What?
HANNAH
The dollar. I said you can have it.
BRANDON
Thats nice.
Hannah waves the bill at him once, beginning to
get annoyed by his lack of gratitude. Brandon
searches for the words to express this stupidity.
BRANDON
Im not homeless.
HANNAH
Oh-oh my God. I am so sorry.
She begins to stuff the dollar away but Brandon
doesnt respond. Hannah assumes that he didnt
hear.
HANNAH
Im sorry.
BRANDON
Whatever.

This is not the response she wanted.

HANNAH
Sorry.
She considers repeating herself, but decides
against it. Turns to leave.
BRANDON
Are you?
She turns back around and engages herself in the
conversation again.
HANNAH
What does that mean?
BRANDON
I saw you talking to that guy.
HANNAH
And...?
This isnt aggressive, even though it may have
been used aggressively in past instances with
Stan.
BRANDON
You said you dont want him to die.
HANNAH
Of course I dont.
BRANDON
So youre worried about him dying, but not actually
about him.
HANNAH
If we both fight hard enough there may beBRANDON
You dont really believe that.
HANNAH
What is your problem?
Slightly sarcastic, as he has said this many

The world is full of shallow-minded assholes. None of
us have any reason to be here that isnt selfish or
superficial.
HANNAH
Dont say that!
BRANDON
Its the truth.
HANNAH
Oh yeah? Give me proof.
BRANDON
You. Youre proof. You only want to save him for
yourself. Its always about you. Youre all superficial
and selfish.
HANNAH
Its love!
BRANDON
Love is selfish.
HANNAH
Love is selfless. I care about him more than anything.
BRANDON
But youre not listening to him.
HANNAH
Well hes not trying anymore. Someones gotta take on
his responsibilities. You wouldnt understand.
BRANDON
Why, cause youre an all-knowing adult?
HANNAH
No, of course not, but Im just saying, if you were in
my situation you would be saying the same things.
She gives a pathetic laugh to herself.

BRANDON
Do I sound like him?
HANNAH
Who?
BRANDON
That guy. Your friend.
HANNAH
Oh... not really?
Quick beat while Hannah waits for him to say
something. These beats are common between her and
Stan, which is just another parallel between
Brandon and Stan. Pace slows. Brandon carefully
chooses his words, as this may be his only chance
to explain himself to anyone.
HANNAH
Why?
BRANDON
You said that I wouldnt be saying what I am if I had
been feeling what you were and...
HANNAH
And?
BRANDON
And the reason Im saying what I am is because Im
feeling the way he is. Kind of. In his situation.
HANNAH
You dont know anything about that.
BRANDON
I do, its just difficult to explain.
HANNAH
Try.
BRANDON
I cant.

HANNAH
Of course you can.
BRANDON
I cant.
HANNAH
You said you understood.
BRANDON
I cant.
HANNAH
Thats feeling something.
BRANDON
I dont!
HANNAH
Just try. Itll feel better.
BRANDON
Its just like how you said I dont understand love,
and I dont, so I left it alone. Its fine, just stop
trying to.
HANNAH
I think you should talk to your friends about this.
BRANDON
No- wait, wait, no, its just... I dont feel. I dont
feel- I cant feel anything. I want to, but I cant. I
cant be happy, or- or excited, and I dont really want
to do things... Its not like nothing gets to me or
anything, but its... like I broke a bone or something.
You cant really forget the pain of a broken bone,
cause its always there no matter what you think or
do, even if you are laughing or smiling, it still
hurts, but eventually youre going to need use it, but
you wont be able to, cause your stupid fucking bone
is still broken, so thats why I cant... do anything.
BRANDON
Like getting myself to care. About anything. I cant do
it.
Beat. She doesnt understand that this wasnt
anything about Stan.

HANNAH
Stan doesnt feel that way. He cant.
BRANDON
Hes just accepted the inevitable.
HANNAH
In that case Im worse off.
BRANDON
What, because of him dying?
HANNAH
Yeah.
BRANDON
...but hes dying.
She has snapped.
HANNAH
Yeah, youre right, he is dying and I have to watch
him die, I cant do anything about it.
BRANDON
Nobody can do anything about it, not just youHANNAH
Somebody should at least love him then!
Little beat and turns down speed down a notch,
but
with same intensity.
HANNAH
I love Stan so much and I know that he loves me too,
but were not right.
BRANDON
But you love each other.
HANNAH

Takes great care to choose these words.

Yes, we do, but just because we love each other doesnt

mean... that we should love each other. You heard us
talking, didnt you? We yell. And fight. A lot. We
always have, but now that hes almost gone... I cant

BRANDON
So, either way youre an asshole.
HANNAH
(laughs) An asshole?
BRANDON
Well either you keep pushing him, and he thinks youre
an asshole for fighting, or you accept hes dying and
you seem like an insensitive asshole to everyone.
HANNAH
Its kind of a lose-lose situation.
BRANDON
Life is a lose-lose situation sometimes.
Big beat. Each have said what they have wanted to
say, and are both burnt out from this
conversation
and the events that took place before. It starts
with a similar energy as it began with, it should
be silently reminded that they are in fact
strangers. Both sit slumped, facing forward in
the
bench.
BRANDON
Sorry about your friend.
HANNAH
Me too.
