Strategies for working on project #3:

What is Surrealism? (Answer as if you were explaining Surrealism to a

friend)
Surrealism is creating through mixing real life things to create an imaginary reality.

List at least three elements of artistic style that commonly defne

Surrealism:
(For example, one example of Surrealistic style is an unnatural use of colors)
1. uncommon use of objects
2. disfguring animals
3. Blending of environments.
From the provided selection of Surrealist art, CHOOSE one piece.

TITLE OF PIECE: Fly With ME

Artistic Style is defined as, but not limited to:

How

an artist handles line, color, shape, movement, visual weight,

etc., these, among many more, define what an artists style is. Style
defines the visual appearance of an artists work.

Style

helps to convey meeting. It is the language of our piece/how

we
communicate ideas.
Style

can encompass anything from the choice of subject to the

feelings
expressed to the choices of the elements of design.

For Example, in Salvador Dalis The Temptation of St. Anthony, the
figures are distorted; they are transforming. Therefore, one stylistic
attribute of this piece would be:
The unnatural distortion/transformation of subjects or figures.

From your selected piece, list three visual elements that

represent your artists style. Explain each element in detail. (If

you need more space use the lined space on the reverse of page 3).
1. Transformation of objects

1. Unnatural mixing of body parts

3.and unnatural correlation between objects

Project

#3 Step-by-Step Walkthrough:

Project #3 is a digital painting. (NO PHOTOGTAPHIC IMAGERY IS

TO BE VISABLE) therefore, we will need to work in a slightly different
manner than we did in our first two pieces.
Make sure to play close attention to the demonstrations in class, as they
will show you ways to paint in a digital workspace/work with the Brush
tool.
There are many strategies to use as we begin work on our digital
paintings. In this strategy sheet I will focus primarily on one strategy.
Creating an under-painting will be our main strategy to begin our
pieces. It is by no means the only approach. If you wish to use a different
strategy, that choice is up to you.
An under-painting provides a basic layout and design for our piece. Under-
paintings are usually rough. The detail will be added on our paint
layers. Creating this under- painting will generally take up half of the
projects time allotment.
Begin by finding digital imagery online or from personal photos that has
the content you wish to work into your piece. Meaning is derived from this
content. This step is exactly the same as it was for projects one and two.
You also have the option of sketching out your content using the brush
tool.
Next, just as with projects one and two, layout the imagery on your
canvas. This step is designing how your subject(s) and environment
interact. You do not need to find every piece of imagery you wish to use.
Remember, this is a painting, and we will be creating our own imagery.
Create a new blank campus in Photoshop. The ppi/dpi
(resolution) must be at 300 ppi. The dimensions also must be at
least 8 x 10 inches.
Import/place your imagery in Photoshop. Using Transforms
and Layer Masks, layout the content of your piece. DO NOT
RUSH THIS STEP.
Lock all of the layers that make up your under---painting.
On a new layer, using the techniques we have worked with in
class and the content of your under---painting, use the
BRUSHTOOL to create digital paint over your under---painting.

Occasionally toggle the visibility of your reference layers/under---

painting on and off.
YOUR UNDERPAINTING WILL BE TOGGLED OFF WHEN
SUBMITTED.
Work slow and build your paint layers. This is a long process.
Pick music you enjoy listening to and try to relax as you work.

PROJECT #3 CHECKLIST:
-Project is a digital painting created completely within
Photoshop.
-I have worked creatively with layers and how played with
how they interact (i.e. opacity/blending modes/masks).
-Used at least fve Layer masks.
-Your project represents stylistic choices related to Surrealism
-Final Photoshop document contains at least 10 la ye r s .
-PROJECT DIMENSIONS ARE AT LEAST 8 BY 10 INCHES.
-PROJECT RESOUTION IS AT 300 DPI.
This project requires at least 10 hours of solid work. It is very easy to
see which projects were made in haste and which ones were crafted with
care. Do your best to create the image you have in your head.
