UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design

Unit 3: Developing Specialist Practice

Project Overview

Context

Illustration is a type of design made by an artist/illustrator. It comes in all sorts of

forms such as drawing, painting, graphics, sketching and digital designs. An illustration
is commonly known as a visual representation such as road signs and logos, but my
favorite aspects of illustration include books, posters, magazines and advertisements.
Illustration has a very large variety of things you can do and can be produced in any
traditional manner and on software's such as illustrator, adobe InDesign and
procreate.

Illustrations can be found almost everywhere, on billboards, flyers, websites, but my

favorite form of illustration is book/poster design. They allow me to practice
typography a lot more than other forms of illustration (book covers especially). My
main source of inspiration for this unit are the goosebump book series and the
designer Tim Jacobus. I find the designs inspirational as the front covers were very
rememberable to me as a child. I love how creepy the design seems while also using a
range of bright fun colors which don’t usually correlate to horror.

Brief

For Unit 3 I will participate in workshops aimed specifically at my subject (illustration,

graphic design, art) and use them to help develop my final outcome. In my first
workshop, I will be experimenting with bookmaking and building the book itself. This
is something I've never tried before and may give me a bit more practice in 3D work. I
will be documenting this journey and uploading it to my website. The second
workshop I'll be participating in is the introduction to drawing and collage techniques.
This workshop will help me experiment with traditional book cover making so I can
decide whether I want to stick to digital designs or not. The final workshop I want to
attend is the printing and pattern making.

Overview of Outcome(s)

- The plan for my Unit 3 final piece is to make a book cover possibly with
illustrations of inside pages too. I will design it to fit my theme of horror and
disturbing imagery to make sure the cover leaves a mark on my demographic. I
may also experiment on producing different genres of the book cover such as
romance, action etc. Or altering the book cover to fit a different audience
(children's book, teenagers, mature).

- Eye catching and engaging
