Rationale Applied custom lettering and illustration with a focus on surface application and promotion. I intend to explore a range of print processes within my practice, including screen print. I intend to explore a range of finishing processes within my practice, such as foil blocking, spot varnish and flock. In addition to this I intend to develop a good understanding of these processes on an industrial level, and how each one would be communicated to a printer through both dialogue and format for print. I intend to visit some printers in an attempt to further my understanding of the print processes and how to communicate my designs to a printer. My work is mainly intended initially for print, but has the potential to be applied to screen based media. I intend to engage in live briefs as well as course briefs to gain personal experience of working to a real deadline and work with a real client. I intend to visit studios and try to arrange placements in order to better my understanding of how the industry works and what the studio environment is like, to gain an understanding of the kind of place I want to work as well as building a network of contacts for when I leave. My work is mainly aesthetically and image driven, but supported with a strong concept. I will undertake briefs that will enable to show my more commercial appeal as well as personally driven briefs that will allow me to showcase my creativity and imagination. I will continue with freelance illustration and drawing practice to ensure continuous development in these areas. I wish to present myself as an image driven graphic designer with illustration as an additional attribute so it is important that my portfolio and studio choices reflect this. I am interested in surface application of illustration and custom lettering applied to packaging, however I am not interested in design for packaging design itself, that is driven by the structure and net. I am interested in editorial illustration and application of custom lettering and editorial to publication, but not layout of type for publication. I am interested in identity and some logo design, but not full branding. My work is primarily aesthetically driven, however it is backed up by a strong concept. I am interested in colour and pattern and how it can be applied to different deliverables. I am interested in designing for a range of budgets whilst always delivering a high quality aesthetic and strong concept.
My work is individually driven whilst responding appropriately to the brief set. I will produce a range of self-promotional deliverables such as business cards, letter heads, invoice, Portfolio, website and mail out in order to promote myself to future clients and studios that I am interested in. I will contact a range of studios that I am interested and send them individual personalized mail shots in an attempt to engage their interest in me. I also intend to develop a better understanding of how image driven design, custom typography and applied illustration fit in a commercial environment. This could be through contacting designers and through ongoing observation and contextual research.
I am interested in surface application of design and illustration to products, but not necessarily with the design of the product itself. I am interested in image driven identity as appose to concept-driven identity. I intend to conduct a broad range of research that is not just design focused.
