Assignment set 4
Due date: Oct 20, 2016

Solve exercise problems 2-2, 2-3, 2-4 and 2-7 from Huangs textbook. Use the charts available in
Huangs textbook for problems 2-2, 2-3 and 2-4. Use KENPAVE for problem 2-7. In addition, complete
the following problems:
1. Equilibrium: When a point load acts on an elastic half-space, show that any arbitrary semi-circular
section as shown in the figure below would be in equilibrium if the stress distribution is such that

2. Linearity: Consider a pavement structure as shown in the figure below.

E1 = 1200 M P a, h1 = 25 cm

1 = 0.5

E2 = 100 M P a

2 = 0.5

Four circular loads with a contact pressure of 600 kPa act on the pavement structure as shown in the
figure below.

Using KENPAVE, compute the vertical surface deflection and the vertical strain on top of the subgrade at the locations A and B shown in the figure in the following methods to check for linearity:
(a) Determine the deflection and strain caused by all the 4 circular loads put together.
(b) Determine the deflection and strain caused by the front two wheels and rear two wheels separately and use superposition to find the total deflection and strain.
(c) Determine the deflection and strain caused by each wheel individually when the tire pressure
is only 500 kPa. Use linear scaling and superposition to get the total deflection and strain.

3. Stress distribution: Consider a pavement as shown in the figure below.

E1 = 2000 M P a, h1 = 12.5 cm

1 = 0.5

E2 = 180 M P a, h2 = 35 cm

2 = 0.5

E3 = 75 M P a

3 = 0.5

A single axle with a single tire on each side is resting on the pavement carrying a total load of 60
kN. The contact radius of the tires are 12 cm and the center-to-center separation between the tires is
2 m.
(a) Determine the vertical stress on top of the subgrade underneath the center of one of the tires
due to the loading from both tires. (It may be necessary to use linearity to obtain the total
vertical stress.) Compare the same with the vertical stress at the same location due to loading
from just one of the tires.
(b) Plot the variation of vertical stress with radial distance at each interface when one of the tires
apply load on the pavement surface.
