Tutorial on utilizing Total War: Medieval II Americas in the classroom


Gamification is the future of education
Gamification involves using game elements or mechanics in a class
setting
Dont just use games for fun but have curricular connection
For example, my lesson connecting Grade 8 Social Studies unit 3
Contact Amongst the Spanish and Aztecs in the Americas
Create a steam account
By game for $21.99 or game plus expansions for $27.99
Start game by pushing play and selecting right campaign
Watch video
Select multiplayer
Select hotseat campaign and select Spanish and Aztec factions
Change difficulty to easy and hit play
Watch second introduction video
Create password and begin turn
Demonstrate city screen and functions, raise/lower taxes, build
structures, recruit army, research historical figures
Show populace mood and effect of taxation
Show how to move a unit, left click on army and right click on
destination
Show use of mini map and find Hernan Cortes in new world
Discuss use of tasks or assignments as you meet a new historical
figure
Finish turn and begin with Aztecs
Finish turn and watch computer factions move
This game teaches citizenship, identity, influence, conquest,
diplomacy, economy, and many other concepts
