Grade One: Math Lesson Plan #2

Activity: Number Chart/ Colour by Numbers Worksheet

Goals/Key questions
Goals: Develop number sense from 1 to 100 and the ability to add two
numbers up to 12 (ie. 12+12=)
This lesson will meet the overall goal by:
Familiarizing students with the number sequence (10s) and the new
numbers, ie. 11, 20, 21, 30, 31, etc.
Show them how to count from one to forty on the number chart and then ask
for volunteers to touch the numbers themselves (or me if they are too high)
and count a series of 10 (10s, 20s, 30s, etc.) counting out loud as they do it
Showing the students how a Hundreds Chart is useful for addition
Ask for volunteers to solve addition questions using the Hundreds Chart on
the smartboard
Worksheets, finish the Hundreds Chart they were given last class or if they
are already finished do the colour by numbers worksheet

Objective (connected to PofS): Students will have a deeper understanding of

how to count forwards from 1 to 100 developing their number
sense. Visual aids will be needed at first and the number chart is
an excellent tool for showing them the number sequence. The
number lines are more tapered for lesson one as they have them
on their desks but only go up to thirty so can only be used for
addition with a sum of 30 or less. Variety is key when teaching
math as students learn in different ways and providing them
with multiple tools to do it gives more students opportunity to
succeed. Although Grade One students are only required to
questions with numbers up to 12 involved (ie. 12+12=) the
chart is a better visual aid for some and since the GLO for Grade
One Math is to develop number sense and SLO 1 is to be able to
say the number sequence from 0 to 100 it is the perfect tool.
General Outcome: Develop number sense.
Specific Outcome 1: Say the number sequence 0 to 100 by:
1s forward between any two given numbers (1 to 10, 10 to 20, 20 to 30, etc.)
Addition with numbers up to 12 (12+12=)

Pre lesson Considerations

Lesson overview of main ideas to be learned and prelearning required:
Some students know how to count from 1 to 20 (or even 100) but not all students
do
Materials needed/Set up required/logistical considerations needed

I will have their Hundreds Chart from last week so put it

in their bins before beginning

Assessment: Formative

Volunteers to count 10s sequence

Volunteers to do addition questions and Hundreds Chart
Triangulation: observations, conversations, and gathering of worksheet at the
end of class

Reflection (Accommodations/Modifications?)

Sample questions should vary in level of difficulty and volunteers should be

selected with this in mind (same with volunteers for number sequences) giving all
the students the opportunity to come up to the front at least once. The worksheets
are completed at the students own pace to accommodate the various levels of
progress so far (some finished their Hundreds Chart in one work period and some
only finished their first row). Also the dot to dot worksheets (although both go up to
100) vary in difficulty, one follows a direct outline around the image and one you
need to know the number sequence from 1 to 100.
