The two models of evolution are the Darwinian Model and the
Lamarckian Model; both of which provide an explanation for the way
traits are inherited from generation to generation. The Darwinian model postulates that in a population, some of the individuals have more beneficial traits than others. These traits help the individual survive long enough to pass on the traits to their offspring, who are also born with the traits. Eventually the disadvantageous traits are not passed on, and new traits may emerge which get passed on. In this manner, the environment is selecting the traits which are passed on, as the individuals with the traits to survive the environment pass on the genes. The Lamarckian model of evolution states that due to the changes in the environment, the individual will change also. As seen in John Relethfords image, the Lamarckian model states that if and individual (in this case a giraffe) needs a certain trait (such as greater height), then it will grow taller, and its offspring will be taller as well. Another way to say this would be to say that an individual is changed by the needs of the environment. This also applies to physical traits, if a rats tail was to be cut, then its offspring would also have shorter tails. The article explains this difference by showing how it is believed that men have one less rib than females, due to God removing a rib from Adam to create Eve. However it fails to take into account the fact that men have the same number of ribs as females, and indicates the faulty logic that the children would have the same number of ribs as Adam, even though they did not have the same experience. Lamarcks model was disproven, and Darwins model stands today as how evolution happens: not because of the environment changing the individual, but rather the individual who is most suited to surviving in the environment passes on its genes.
