Title: Community and Remembrance

Throughout this unit, Stage 2 students will have the opportunity
to explore Australian history and consider

The importance of Country and Place to Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples
Important dates in Australian History leading up to the
signicance of the 26th of January.
The events that have occurred in your past and how you
remember them

This unit is created to align with the Australian Curriculum,
Assessment and Repor,ng Authority (Australian Curriculum,
Assessment and Repor,ng Authority, 2012) as it provides the
opportunity for all students in Australian schooling to gain
greater knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander people, their history and cultures. More
specically this unit is created around the key concept of
Country and Place. As stated in Australian Ins,tute for Teaching
and School Leadership (2016) teachers must acknowledge the
tradi, onal and original owners of this con, nent and pay respect
to todays Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait
communi,es. Thus, crea,ng a s,mula,ng environment and
posi,ve learning environments for all students will enable an
open learning context to strengthen posi,ve recogni,on of
cultures in Australian schooling (Australian Ins,tute of Health
and Welfare, 2011).

Rationale
This project has been designed based on the principles underpinned in the Australian Curriculum,
Assessment and Repor,ng Authority (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Repor,ng Authority,
2012) as well as the Outcomes and Indicators in the Board of Studies Teaching & Educa, onal
Standards NSW (BOSTES, 2014). Together, these key documents target the importance of Australian
history, more specically Community and Remembrance. Essen, ally, the concept of Country and
Place to all Australians is explored to gain more knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander people, their history and cultures.

This project has been created to address an issue in Australian history. More specically it is aimed to
explore the 26th of January as it is a symbolic date known to Australians. It is designed to open
perspec, ves on the actual meaning being this date. This being said, it is important to recognise as a
teacher that most students will view this date as the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of Bri,sh Ships at
Port Jackson, and the raising of the Flag of Great Britain at Sydney Cover by Governor Arthur
Phillip (Australian Ins,tute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, 2016). However, For
Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders, it marks a day that forcefully adempted to eradicate people from
Australia and commonly known as a day of mourning and loss known as Invasion day or Survival
day (McGrady, 2016).

To assist learning 4 resources have been put together, these include: Bingo Timeline highligh,ng
important events and dates in Australian history. ICT using Canva to create an online poster about
the famous Yabun Fes,val. An interview sheet and a facts sheet for students to interview people
and gain an insight into how certain people view signicant events in their leg and how people can be
aected dierently. Lastly, students will have the opportunity to view an artwork by an Aboriginal
creator known as Angampa Mar,n and an inspira,on table will also be set up to provide students
with inspira,on to then create their own artwork. Essen, ally, these resources have been u,lised in
this project to open students perspec, ves and build on prior knowledge to enhance the concept of
Australian history of Community and Remembrance.

I put together resources that I had access to of puzzles, artwork, instruments

with Aboriginal inspired artwork on them, pictures of artworks and an
Aboriginal puppet of a man used for story telling to create my inspira,on
table.

An Art inspira,on table set up to provide explora,on of colour and paderns that are evident in
Aboriginal artworks. An artwork from Angampa Mar?ns (Australian Aboriginal ar,st) as seen above
allows children to observe an Aboriginal art piece and its adributes. By observing this artwork and
through observa,on of the art inspira,on table students can then create their own Aboriginal inspired
artwork.
