The most important event in his advertising career happened a year before he was
born, at that was his fathers decision of marrying a scotish woman who possessed
certain qualities, that Hopkins said he inharited, one of them being the need of
always being caucious.
He says that most of the wreks are happening because people tend to rush and
neglect certain dangers that might occure.
He then talks abput the importance of being calculated when it comes to money.
Based on his mothers teachings, he began to see each dime equaly important as a
dollar. He never gambled large amounts of money, so he never lost important
quanities, but when he won, he won both for the client (in money) and for himself
(in prestige).
Hopkins talks about the poor. He never knew how to sell things to rich people. He
always focused on the avarege, the people with medium incomes, lets say, even on
the poor. His sentences were always short. Even a scholar might laugh at his style of
selling, and the rich might laugh at the ideas he is promoting, but he always talks to
the milions of normal persons, and they became his clients.
Will Carleton- a highschool mate of his father, also a known writer, notices th ultra
religious vibe in Hopkins house, and he writes a ballad based on this experience.
This writing will influence Clauds future.
He creates a bond between working and playing. He says that what other might see
as hard work, other might see as a game and vice versa. He underlined the
importance of doing what you love in order to truly enjoy it.
C2:
His father owned a newspaper, so Claude became used to the idea of advertising,
as he was always witnessing it via his fathers buissness.
He is underlining the idea that the easiest way of selling something is offering
samples. As long as the buyer is able to test the product one way or another, he will
be easier conviced to buy, that persuading him to buy without some form of proof.
As an advertiser, you must never crate an opinion, or judge something by yourself,
beucase you are not creating a product for you own, subjective use, but for the
general use, so you must pay attention to the opinion of the vast majority.
