History Alfred Hitchcock made the first thriller film in 1926. It was a silent film called The Lodger and was a story based on Jack the Ripper. The second thriller film was made in 1929 by Alfred Hitchcock and was called Blackmail. This was the first sound film in Britain. Genre Conventions The audience expect to see characters behaving in a natural manner. This means that they would want to see characters acting and reacting to certain situations in the same way that a normal person would. This helps the audience connect to the film more as it helps them to imagine they are in the same situation as the character. Using realistic situations and locations helps the audience picture themselves in the situations the characters are in. when the situations and locations used are believable, the audience are able to get more into the film and are possibly able to relate to an extent. Having lots of enigmas creates mystery and places questions in the audiences minds making them more interested and curious about what will happen next. The protagonist always has knowledge or a certain skill that he/she must hide isolating them from other people and loved ones, making them isolated and alone. The protagonist often has a flaw or weakness in which the antagonist will try to use against them. The protagonist usually overcomes the obstacle, however sometimes the antagonist successfully uses the protagonists weakness against them. Sub-Genres The definition of a thriller is Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film and television, having numerous subgenres. Thrillers are characterized and defined by the moods they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety.
