Making Up
Work After
an Absence
Explain-

State the Procedure: Today we'll learn the procedure for making up work
if you're absent.
Generate Rationale: This procedure is important for keeping everyone
on track, since most of you will miss at least one day over the course of
the school year. It eliminates the necessity of talking to the teacher to get
your missing work.
Explain the Procedure: On the day
you're back from being absent,
you should stop at the makeup work
station before or after class. There
you will find a bin labeled for each
day of the week. Collect the daily
work and homework
assignments for each day you
missed. They are all due one
week after you've collected the
work. Once you've collected the work, write your name, today's date,
and put a checkmark next to the day or days you're collecting work for
on the sheet located at the station.
Check for Understanding: "What do you do after you've collected your
missing work?"

RehearsePractice the Procedure: Have students

go in groups to collect the daily work
and homework for different days of the
week, but make sure they fill out the
makeup station sheet correctly.
Give Specific Feedback: "You filled
out the makeup station sheet perfectly!"

ReinforceReteach, Practice, and Reinforce:

-Practice the procedure again the next day
with different groups
-Have each student fill out a mock makeup
station sheet at their desks
-Discuss each step again during the 2nd
and 3rd weeks of school

RememberAt the end of the first month of school, quiz the

students on the makeup work station procedures
and the proper way to fill out the makeup station
sheet.
