BIM (Building Information Model) IN AECO INDUSTRY

By: Jagatjeet Mohapatra

With the passage of time the advancement in technology and standardization in AECO
(Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operation) industries and acceptance of
sustainable development aspects such as social, economic and environment by BIM
(Building Information Model) has increased to a greater extend. The environmental
aspect has received much attention by BIM as compared to other two aspects.
The social aspect further covers two themes I.e. People and Collaboration and
partnership. The first theme provides people with safe, comfortable and better working
condition in order to achieve higher productivity. The economic aspects cover three
themes- Quality, Time and Cost. The first theme explains quality of projects to be done
in AECO industries by using BIM. The second theme is about timely completion of
project. The last theme explains how cost effectively the needs and expectation can be
fulfilled in construction industry. The environ aspects cover Energy, Waste, Water,
carbon and materials. The BIM uses have been emphasized on the simulation for energy
performance and saving in the environment aspect of sustainable development.
In AECO industry the sustainability aspects are achieved through BIM. It was designed
for more bottom-up strategies, better leadership to promote sustainability, improved
building management, Effective information sharing and communication reduced
liability, Better scheduling of construction activities, improved project management,
Effective waste management through improved material reuse and resource
management .The BIM gives useful insight for future development of BIM uses in order
to achieve a balance sustainable performance. Though BIM is usually still there is lack
of comprehensive explanation on how BIM uses can support sustainability objectives
throughout the project life cycle.
