A pair of Hillmen cross country

records fell Saturday at the 48th annual Dick McKichan Platteville Invitational at UWPlattevilles Veterans
Memorial Park.
Platteville senior Vince Momot
outdueled some of the best runners
in this part of the state, beating all
of them to win the boys varsity race.
He finished first out of 162 runners
and in the process set a new Platteville course record with a winning
time of 16:19.5.
Momot beat runner-up Christopher Pahnke (16:23.8) of McFarland
by more than four seconds.
For Vince to win this meet is
big, said Platteville head coach Rob
Serres. There are really some great
runners out there, and he went out
and gave a fantastic effort for the
win, and for a new PHS course record. We are so proud.
Momot led the Platteville boys to
a third-place team finish in the large
school division, but he had plenty of
help. Junior Dan Iselin finished seventh overall at 17:02 to earn a top10 medal. Freshman Jace Serres finished 15th overall at 17:27, senior

Blake Julius placed 40th at 18:14

and senior Tom Lambert was 56th at
18:40 to round out the Hillmen team
score. Both Serres and Julius earned
ribbons for top-40 finishes.
The Platteville boys finished third
with 85 points, behind champion McFarland (43) and runner-up Madison
Edgewood (74).
We are a tough, tough team, one of
the best we have had, added Serres.
But, we are running up against some
tough teams as well. We have more
in us, and we have a mission to be
better, and we will be.
Junior Brelynn Updike set the
other Platteville course record by
finishing 15th overall out of 138 runners in the girls varsity race with a
time of 21:02.3.
Belleville junior Noelle Marie blew
away the field to win the girls individual title with a winning time of
19:04.7, nearly half a minute better than runner-up Brooke Lonigro
(19:30.0) of McFarland.
Updike led the Platteville girls to
a seventh-place finish in the large
schools division with 135 points.
Sophomore Morgan Wehnke (24th,

FENNIMORE The Milk Can is staying at

IowaGrant.
Senior Brayden Johnson rushed for 175 yards
and scored all three IG touchdowns to lead the
Panthers to a 2212 come-from-behind victory in
the 46th annual rivalry game Friday at Fennimore High School.
We were a little sluggish to start but played better as the game went on, said IowaGrant head
coach Gary Allen. Our leaders stepped up in the
second half and everyone really played with a lot
of intensity. The kids were frustrated at halftime
but instead of falling apart they came together
and played well. We were able to complete some
passes and our fullbacks Zach Campbell and Brady
Peat had some good carries. That loosened things
up for Brayden.
A week after blowing a 22-point halftime lead
and being held scoreless in the second half of a
5036 loss to Mineral Point, IowaGrant struggled offensively for the first 24 minutes of Fridays
SWAL match-up.
The Fennimore defense pitched a first-half shutout and Tucker Trefz scored on a 4-yard run with
21 seconds left in the half to give the host Golden
Eagles a 60 lead going into halftime.
The Panthers (52, 41 SWAL) were inside the
Fennimore 5-yard line once in the first half, but
the Golden Eagles held on downs.
But the IowaGrant offense finally got on track
early in the third quarter.
A long Caleb Hill pass to Collin Price set up an
11-yard Johnson touchdown run and Acea Upmanns extra point gave the visiting Panthers a
76 lead just 45 seconds into the second half.
That catch early in the second half was big,
added Allen. I think sometimes our opponents
concentrate so much on Brayden, other kids get
opportunities.
The defensive battle continued until late in the
fourth quarter when Johnson scored from three
yards out with 2:22 left. He added the two-point
conversion to make it 157.
After a Fennimore turnover, Johnson scored

Lancaster last Thursday.

MADISON The wins keep piling up

for this years senior-dominated Platteville volleyball team.
The Hillmen won five more matches
on Saturday to win the Edgewood Invitational. Platteville swept the host
Crusaders (1910) 2519, 2516 in the
championship match to win the title.
Coach Lindsay Neals Hillmen
(ranked fourth in Division 2) improved
to 294 overall and have won 19 straight
matches dating back to a 20 loss to
Merrill in the championship match of
the UWWhitewater Warhawk Open on
Aug. 29. The Hillmen have also won 28
of their last 29 matches since beginning
the season 13 at the Watertown Early
Bird Tournament.
I am very happy we are on such a
winning streak, said Neal. I think it
shows the level of talent I am working

with. We have gone up against a number of Division 1 schools during and beat
them. The streak is due to our dedication
to being the best and looking toward our
postseason goals.
Platteville was as dominant as ever on
Saturday, winning all 10 sets it played,
never allowing an opponent to score
more than 19 points in any set.
The Hillmen crushed Beaver Dam 25
9, 256, then swept Potosi 2511, 2519
to begin pool play. Platteville then swept
Division 1 Madison Memorial to win its
pool and earn a first-round bye in singleelimination bracket play.
The Hillmen made quick work of D1
Waunakee, 2514, 2511, in the semifinals before sweeping host Edgewood.
Senior Morgan Stecklein led the
Platteville with 34 kills, 36 digs and 21
aces in five matches. Allison Woodworth
had 19 kills and a team-high 12 blocks.
