football inexperience right

thing is we dont have kids
that have lost. All of the
kids we have now have
won for the last two seasons, and they dont know
what its like to lose, and
theyre not going to let it
happen easily.

The hardest position in
this offense is quarterback,
and theres nobody playing quarterback that hasnt
been around, Conner said.
Some of the new guys are
playing running back and
wide receiver and offensive line. Those are positions where we can teach
you and you dont have to
have to have as much foot-
our more athletic kids. If

in. We like to call it ammunition. We feel like we
have enough ammunition
for every type of offense

Last year, as good as
those guys (defensive linemen) were, I knew that no

team would line up and
run the ball right at us. We
were a little bit deficient in
some pass rush because we
basically had four defensive tackles on the football
field, Conner said.
I do feel better about
some of our pass rush abilities and some of our athleticism. But I have a little
more concern about when
we play Napoleon, can
they successfully get four
yards a carry and grind on
us? Thats going to be by
committee though.

is switching to a shotgun,
no huddle formation after
using the Wing-T.
We struggled to find
ourselves offensively,
Rutherford

Normally, we find our
identity and I dont think
we really did that last
year.
Eastwood made the
switch to capitalize on its
talented group of backs
and receivers, Rutherford
said.
We can get in the shotgun and we can get in the
no huddle, but were still a
Wing-T team and thats
what we believe in,
Rutherford said. But at
the same time, you have to
utilize the athletes you
have, and we have some
athletes who can do some
things that the shotgun
would benefit their abilities better.

season, Baker will see

receiver this fall. Last season Baker threw for 523
yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 306
yards and four scores.
We can move him into
spots where we can utilize
him better. Wherever
we can put him in position
where he can be successful
and also help the team,
Cooper said.

the program. We need to

Cooper is counting on

Seniors Jordan Thrash,
5-8, 180, and Ryan Krouse,
6-4, 305, are returning on

Krouse is probably one
of the best linemen we
have had here as far as size
and footwork, Cooper
said. Thrash is not a big
kid, but he is a prototypical guard. You dont want
to get in his way. He is a
thick-bodied kid and easily
pound-for-pound the strongest kid on the team.

NBC title with new faces

MILLBURY Lake
has plenty of new faces
this season.
The teams expectations, however, havent
changed.
Even though the Flyers
return just two starters on
offense and five on
defense, they still expect
to contend for the Northern
Buckeye
Conference
championship and a berth
in the Division V state
playoffs.
Fourteen
lettermen
return for the Flyers, who
were 10-1 overall and 7-0
in the NBC last season.
They enjoyed a 10-0 regular season and the conference championship before
losing in the first round of
the playoffs.
We have the physical
tools and I think we have
the mental tools, Lake

coach Mark Emans said.
But we have to get them
some experience in practice, in scrimmages, in
games, so that experience
will translate to confidence. With experience,
you gain confidence.
The Flyers are 26-6
overall and 17-4 in the
NBC in three seasons
under Emans. They posted
eight-win seasons and
were 5-2 in the conference
in 2013 and 2014, advancing advanced to the playoffs in 2013.
We had a nice, strong
junior varsity team last
year, and they got some
good (repetitions), and
they practiced against our
varsity, Emans said.
Now, its their turn to
wear the Friday night uniform and perform at the
varsity level.

back Travis Greene.
Johnson and Greene
graduated, Lewis left for
the NFL with two years of
eligibility remaining, and
Dieter graduated and transferred to Alabama.
Bowling Green scored
42.2 points per game last
season when it went 10-4
overall and 7-1 in the
MAC. Johnson threw for a
school record 4,946 yards
and 46 touchdowns while
completing 67 percent of
his passes. He graduated
with a BG record 73 touchdowns and 8,845 yards,
which ranks third in school
history.
In two seasons, Lewis
had 2,673 receiving yards
and 23 touchdowns, and
Greene left as Bowling
Greens all-time leading
rusher with 3,852 yards.
He is third in school history with 38 touchdowns.

who can make a lot of
plays, said fifth-year
senior quarterback James
Knapke, who is all but

tion. There are a lot of

doubters out there. There
are a lot of people thinking
this is going to be a down
year. A lot of guys have
kind of taken that to heart
and were on a mission.
Weve got a big chip on
our shoulders to prove that
we can still do the things
that weve done in the past.

went 41-8 in its four varsity seasons.
Perrysburg, which averaged 43.4 points per game
last year, has been to the
playoffs four straight seasons and has won three

Lakes League championships.
Kregel credited the
community for the success
of the program.

good community support.
Parents understand our
process. They know how
hard we work the kids, so
they give us free reign to
get the kids up at 5:30 in
the morning all summer
and work them out. You

things without good families, because the kids wont

do it. I think that has been
our advantage.
Most notably among
the players that Perrysburg
will be replacing is quarterback Trevor Hafner,
who threw for 3,838 yards
and 44 touchdowns in his
career. As a senior, Hafner
threw for 2,781 yards and
33 touchdowns, and ran
for 924 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Junior Spencer Backus
will take his spot. The
5-foot-11, 180-pounder
completed 11 of 23 passes
for 182 yards and three
scores last season.
We have developed
our style and we can make
that fit with a runner quarterback, a throwing quarterback, or somebody who
can do both, Kregel said.
We tailor what we can do
with the quarterbacks we
have now. We do what they
can do.
Trevor is a whole different story. He can do
things other guys cant. So
you have to figure out what
quarterback can do and
tailor the offense toward
that.

Knights look to build on youth

fans and foes of Otsego
will recognize many of the
players on 2016 edition of
the Knights football team.
With low numbers in
the two top classes last

season, numerous freshmen and sophomores were
called upon to play.
Otsego struggled to a
1-9 overall record and a
1-6 mark in the Northern
Buckeye Conference, but
the underclassmen gained
a lot of experience.
Last year we were in
some close games, but we
realize that we played quite
a few sophomores and
freshmen last year. Those
kids, realistically, shouldnt
have been playing varsity
football. At a bigger school
they would not be playing

varsity football, said Matt
Dzierwa, in his fourth season as the Knights head
coach. We knew we were
going to take our lumps,
but we tried to be patient

There was an offensive
change midway through
the 2015 season as the
Knights switched from a
Wing-T to using more of a
spread formation.
We knew we had some
kids on the edge that could
run and catch, Dzierwa
said. Over the summer
and through two-a-days
thats what we have worked
on as we try to get better.
The offensive unit will
be led by three players
who earned second-team
All-NBC honors last season Chad Robertson, a
6-foot-2, 230-pound senior
at offensive guard; Will
Varner, a 6-0, 185-pound,
junior wide receiver; and
Cody Vance, a 5-8,
165-pound, senior running
back.
Robertson will have to
anchor the offensive line
for the Knights.
Chad plays hard on
Friday nights. Hes a big
strong kid, Dzierwa said.
Our

is where
we are
challenged,
he continued.

Varner had 35 receptions for 414 yards and six

on defense in terms of
being vocal and being a
leader, Dzierwa said
about Varner.
Limes is back at linebacker after making 71
tackles last season. McNett,
Battin,
and
Mason
Gonzales,
a
5-11,
165-pound senior, are also
linebackers.
We want to be better
than 1-9 there is no doubt
about that, and I think we
can, Dzierwa said. We
have to progress in practice, scrimmages and
games to where we are
going to be a lot better
than last year.
Their attitude in practice has been really great,
he continued. The effort
is better. Its not exactly
where I want it to be all
the time, but the attitude
and enthusiasm is a lot
better.

just one starter on the
offensive line.
The Yellow Jackets
have 19 seniors, 18 juniors
and 22 sophomores on its
varsity roster. The freshman team has 36 players.
Were going to be
playing several sophomores on both sides of the
ball, Kregel said.
You have to simplify
to an extent. You can still
make it look like youre
doing a lot of things, but
you have to stay simple up
front with the lineman, you
have to stay a little more
simple with the motions

and the shifting and that
kind of thing. Its just repetition after repetition to
try to get them to where
theyre dependable.
As powerful as the
offense was last season,
the defense was just as
dominant, allowing just
17.6 points per game.
The most glaring hole
to fill is linebacker Chaz
Westfall, who had 176
tackles last season and 147
as a junior.
The Jackets have gone
7-0 in the NLL in each of
the last three seasons with
its last league loss coming
to Napoleon on Oct. 12,
2012.
Our goal is to win a
league championships and
to get into the state playoffs, ultimately, Kregel
said. The way were handling it with this group is
lets see how we start and
well talk about that when
the time comes. Its truly a
day-to-day thing with a
young team, and you evaluate how you practiced
that day.

Bulldogs have challenges ahead

in trying to build on last season

Rossford is striving to
build on last season.
The Bulldogs finished
9-3 overall and 6-1 in the
Northern
Buckeye
Conference, and advanced
to the second round of the
Division V state playoffs.
But repeating last seasons success wont be
easy.
Although the Bulldogs
return 17 lettermen and
have 18 seniors, they were
hit hard by graduation. Just
eight starters three on
offense and five on defense
return.
Rossford won its final
six regular-season games
and its first playoff game
last fall. The Bulldogs
were second in the NBC,
losing only at Lake in their
conference opener by a
49-46 score. The Flyers
enjoyed a 10-0 regular season and advanced to the
Division V playoffs.

Were an inexperienced team, but were not
a young team, Drusback
said. We had a lot of
(lettermen) get quality
playing time last season,
not just in the fourth quarter when the game was
already decided, but playing time when the game
wasnt decided. Thats a
benefit.
And Rossford faces a
difficult start to the season.
It has nonconference
games at Bowling Green,
at home against Port
Clinton and at Northwood,
and then hosts Lake to start
NBC play. BG was 8-3 last
season, while PC was 7-4
and Northwood was 6-4.
The only way you gain
experience is to play, and
theyre going to have to
grow up fast, Drusback

said. We know who we
have, and we have to get
our best 11 guys on the
field. We have to figure
out who they are and where
they go. We think were
going to get better as we
gain experience.
Rossford averaged 39.1
points and 425.7 yards last
fall, but graduated quarterback Chase Baney; running back Erik Davis;
receiver Dylan Nawrocki;

seasons.
Statistically ranked as
one of the top defenses in
the nation in 2013, the
Falcons were a dominant
bunch. But in 2014 and
2015, the defense has been
unfeared, and perhaps
desirable to match up
against.
New defensive coordinator Perry Eliano the
fourth DC at Bowling
Green since 2013 has a
plan to hopefully stop that
stigma.

bend but dont break, and
for us we want to go make
things happen so develop that mind set that were
going to go attack on every
play but be smart about it.
We want to get after it and
play aggressive, relentless
defense.
The Falcons will be
thinner at defensive line
than in years past.

early for the NFL, as did

Michigan dreaming big in 2016

If anyone makes jokes
about Michigan aiming to
win its first Big Ten title
since 2004 and national
championship since 1997,
thats exactly the reaction
Jim Harbaugh wants.
If people arent making fun of you for what
your dreams are and what
your goals are, then you
havent set those goals and
dreams high enough,
Harbaugh said.
Michigan went 10-3 last
season, doubling its wins
from the previous year in
coach Brady Hokes final
season.
The Wolverines surpassed modest expectations, but were humbled
by losing to Ohio State for
the 11th time in 12 years
and heartbroken by a seventh setback in eight games
to Michigan State.
Here are some things to
watch as Harbaugh begins
his second season in Ann
Arbor:
Jourdan Lewis, both of

whom are primarily used
on defense, are expected to
take some snaps on offense.
And they will likely return
some punts and kicks, too.
While Peppers was used
on offense to run, catch
and throw the ball, Lewis
has only been used as a
kickoff returner outside of
his role as a cornerback.
Lewis is thankful his lobbying
efforts
with
Harbaugh appear to have
paid off.

about playing on offense
since he got here, Lewis
said. Ive always wanted
to do it here to help the
team win, and Im glad it
