Chartwork
Chart BA 2675: English Channel
Gyro Error 1 E; Variation 5W
Time Allowed: 1 hours
Pass mark: 70%
Note: Candidates are required to show evidence of tidal stream calculations on the chart and
corrections of courses in their written work.

On 2007 September 20 a ship with speed 12 knots was en route to Southampton. At

0400 she was in position 49 55.0N 005 00.0W. From this position she set a course
076 (T). Two hours later the OOW obtained a GPS position as 49 57.0N 004
14.0W. It was noted that the vessel was being affected by a tidal stream that
morning.
Determine:
a. The set, rate and drift of the tidal stream.
b. The course made good from 0400.

[9]
[6]

From the passage plan, the new course was set onto Anvil Pt. light.
c. Assuming that the effect of the tidal stream changed to set 190 at a rate of 2
knots and a leeway of 3 was caused by a Southerly wind; determine the gyro
course and compass course to steer to follow this track.
[15]
d. Determine the ETA abeam the Bill of Portland light and the gyro bearing of
the light at this time.
[10]

e. Describe in detail, the characteristics of Bill of Portland light.

[5]

From the abeam position at Bill of Portland light, the course was altered to pass
5 miles off St. Catherine Pt. light. Determine the gyro course to steer if at this
time it was 4 hours after HW for a spring tide and there was no wind.
